  1. My personal answer to that question would be a definite "NO"  Mégane. The chicks need feeding every couple of hours, sometimes more often than that, and like you say, if you're out at work all day that's way too long for the chicks not to be fed. The best way is for the parents to do it themselves as at least that way they'll get the amount of food they need along with nutrients provided by their parents.

I understand you want a closer bond with your birds but Zebra Finches are not really the birds for that. That can be done better with budgies, lorikeets and Parrots but in general finches are very "skitist" and tend to be wary of humans and will fly away. I have on occasions had finches settle on my outstreched hand whilst in my avaries, I had a hand full of seed and it took along time for it to occur and even then they flew off after a couple of seconds.

If you go onto "youtube" they're a few video's of people hand rearing baby zebbies but the time and effort required is intense and doesn't always end with babies reaching adulthood.

Just enjoy watching and listening to the parents feeding them and enjoy watching them grow, and learning how to copy what their parents do etc..

Yes. Going to give it a go this year for the first time, time premitting.

  3. Now some of this seasons babies have fledged and eating on their own I've transferred them to one (of two) nursery aviaries/pens to let them colour up. Mixed start to my breeding season, many eggs, lots infertile, some that were fertile got hatched but parents didn't feed them, oh the joys of breeding.:( I have managed to ring 15 so far, one of which died at 21 days but the remaining 14 so far (touching wood)  seem to be doing ok. Here's a short video of some of them in their new home.... Hope you like?

I tend to stick to CFW's, I have a few lights-backs and the odd normal. Currently trying (as always) BCCFW's. Long process (2 years ) hopefully the ones that have fledged last week and next week will be the ones I'm after.

  5. Indeed lol he moved all the chipping away by standing on the bottom flapping his wings (very clever or just coincidence) then started ripping up the newspaper up underneath, but one piece just kept bigger and bigger as it tore and it wouldn't break off. He then started to have a paddy I kid you not. He got hold of it again and started making a right noise, similar to the noise when they fight with each other. He proper spat his dummy out, I couldn' believe what I was seeing, like a toddler having a strop in a shop if they don't get the sweets they want. At this point I went back in the house to get my phone to video him but by the time I got back he had sorted it. ?
