  1. Hey people!

I would like to ask you a question about the likings of your birds.  I make my own seed mix and I've tried like every fatty seed I know birds like to fill that little pertentage of fatty seeds that it's usually added to the mixes. I've tried rapeseed, flaxseed, chia, nyjer seed and perilla seed. At first the female ate nyjer seeds, and she ate perilla seeds when it came on the eggfood(probably because it tasted a bit like it?). But now she doesn't eat them, and when I added perilla in the mix she stopped eating them. Do your birds eat any fatty seed?

I also give them some mealworms once a week. Is that enough to fill their fat requirements?

I live in a city with a warm weather all year round, do you think that could be the reason of them not eating these kind of seeds? Maybe they don't need them, do they?

  2. I know it's an old post and maybe you won't read it but maybe somebody else can benefit of it.

When I let my zebra finches fly around my room I always let their cage open and they usually came back when the day was ending and going dark(9:00PM here). Sometimes they "forgot" to do it and what I did to take them back was closing the window blind and turning off the light. They see in darkness a lot worse than we do, so it was easy to spot them, take them and returning them to their cage. It may be frightening for them, but I think it's more stressing and frightening to be chased for a long time until they can't go on.

Maybe if you let them out at a time when you can wait for the night they would enter the cage to sleep by themselves in a more consistent basis.
