  1. Many thanks for your comments.

It would be nice if they were all hens, but I don't think I'll be that lucky :cray:

It's nice to get this pair going after 4 months of trying, sometimes you just have to be persistent with some birds.

Both birds had never been paired before with the hen being one year older than the cock. Now they have realised what they need to do I'm sure they'll do the business again.

    Gary.

  2. Hi All,

Thought you might find these of interest, 4 normals that fledged this morning.

A bit dirty at the back end, but they'll clean up later.

  3. Hi Kenny,

From time to time I put new members on admin approval to make sure they are genuine and not spam applications.

From your recent posts I can see that your application to become a member of ZFF was genuine so I have now removed admin approval from your profile.

    Best regards,

    Gary.

  4. Emmy,

Safflower oil is very nutritious having a very high omega 6 content and it also contains omega 9. It also has a significant vitamin E content.

I use it in my egg food to help the birds during breeding.

    Hope this helps,

    Gary.

  5. Hello Mack,

I think just the use of the word "Cull" is something that will cause great upset to a large number of members on the forum as many breeders keep their birds as a hobby and not to exhibit.

I'm not aware of any exhibition breeders that resort to these methods to improve the quality in their stock and I know a lot of Zebra enthusiasts.

I fall in to the "hobby" category myself, although I'd like to think that I do have some quality birds in my set-up and I would never consider these tactics to improve my stock.

Maybe you should choose your words more carefully in future as it's clear that a number of people have taken offence to what you have posted.

This is a friendly forum and I would like it to stay that way.

    Gary.

  6. Hi Kerry,

I've seen this before with nests where it gets absolutely filthy before the chicks fledge. It's the parents that I notice first on their tails and even though I give them baths they sometimes ignore them while their rearing young.

The conditions will only get worse so if it were me, I'd change it for a fresh nest, If you can prepare a new one before hand rather than using the old one this would help to keep the disruption to a minimum.

If the chicks come out of the nest try to return them and hold your hand over the front for a couple of minutes to helps settle them down.

I have also used the same tactic to return chicks in an aviary environment when they have fledged too early and it's worked for me on many occasion.

In the summer months I will switch a nest box to a fresh one half way through the rearing process if I think things are going to get messy.

What rearing food are you using as this can contribute to the chicks and parents being very wet at the back-end.

    Hope this helps,

    Gary.
