  1. I’ll second that on the aniseed, I mix it in with my seed, attracts them like fly’s.It’s also good for birds with aliments as it encourages them to feed. You should have said, I was up at Bamfords last weekend I would have picked you some up.Gary.

  2. Me and the misses had a ride over to Bamfords in the truck yesterday to collect some seed and other bits and pieces, Seed prices have gone up since we visited in July, but Easibed has dropped by £2.00 a bail :)Panicum Millet 20kg = £14.90 No. VatWhite Millet 20kg = £11.93 No. VatRed Millet 20kg = £15.46 No. VatAniseed Oil = £2.82 Inc. Vat (These were a bit pricey, but they are really good quality)This should keep me going for a while. Gary.

  3. Hi Mark,I sometimes use cod liver oil in my egg food, one thing you have to be careful of is that it goes off so you need to make sure you dispose of any old seed and do not re-use it.I would put it in egg food rather than seed as this gets digested straight away and is very rarely left or scattered like seed.Hope this helps,Gary.

  4. Welcome to the forum Damian. We look forward to hearing how things progress with your new project. Personally I would line your shed walls with polystyrene sheets available for good builder’s merchants or B&Q. I would then ply line over the top with ¼ or 6mm ply, you can then paint as required. If you’re going to install electrics I would do this before you line the walls.Another option would be to purchase a purpose built setup. Here’s a link to a supplier: Birds & Things

  5. Hi Trevo That was a stroke of luck with the CFW black cheeks, how prominent is the cheek patch? I have a couple of normal cocks from a previous Grey Cheek pairing so I’m going to pair these back to the hens I have from last year’s birds. I’m then going to pair the cocks I have to CFW hens to see what they produce. Regards,Gary.

  6. I agree Trevor, patience is really important when breeding for colour. The reason why I ask is that I have a number of this type and although the white and cream are good the cheek patches are faint.I’ve only got a couple of pairs down at the moment, but I’ve just bred a cock bird which is starting to moult into its adult plumage so it will be interesting to see how it turns out. This was achieved by using a CFW cock with a Grey Cheek hen.Gary.

  7. Has anyone got any tips/ideas on how to cure an egg eater, I’ve got a pair that raised several clutches last year without any problem, but for some unknown reason one of them has started to eat the egg/s not long after they have been laid. I only have two pair down at the moment, just for interest and the other pair are breeding as normal. I’ve now resorted to removing the nest box and I really don’t want to split them up because they are a good match. Both birds are in good condition so I’m not sure why one or both of them have resorted to eating their eggs. My suspicions lie with the hen, as she has always come out of the nest after I find half or a full egg eaten. If anyone can shed any light on this it would be much appreciated.Gary.

  8. Welcome to the forum Sam. It’s a bad time to be looking for good quality birds as most breeders have only just started to pair their birds for the coming breeding season, although some do breed birds all year round. Jeff on here lives in your neck of the woods and he’s just started with Zebs again, not sure if he will have any yet though? There’s also a sale at billsburrow village hall on Sundays which you may be interested in.Good luck,Gary.

  9. Clive Cotton (ex Chairman of the Zebra Finch Society) started breeding Penguins and he also developed a website called Simply Penguins, but I’m not sure how far he got with them and if he still keeps them. Have a look at his site and see if you can get in contact with him: Simply PenguinsHope this helps,Gary ;) ;)

  10. Welcome to the forum,Christmas was very good in the Zebraman house hold, I’m afraid a little too much turkey and wine though. It’s good to hear that you’re getting back into keeping Zebs again, please feel free to ask as many questions as you like.Gary.

  11. Yep, he’s back here too, we’ve had about 4 inches and there’s no sign of it stopping. The heaters are back on and it looks like it's going to continue right through into the New Year.I’ve had the same problem Trevor with tail plucking and squabbling, I try to keep them occupied with plenty of millets. Things should change a bit now that Mr Frosty is back?Gary.
