  1. Hey Trevor,

i have the same experience, lots of clear eggs in the spring early summer, now i have got all fertile eggs and a good hatch rate last 3 weeks.

maybe we should show them in the spring breed them in Autumn.

    Cheers Kim

  2. Hi Emmy,

this thread is a great read, i am gutted you lost the chick, do you to give the chicks water on its own ??

i just wondered if poor ol weeny was dehydrated, this may explain the constipation.

I have no experience at hand rearing, but thought i would offer you some support.

    Cheers Kim

  3. Hi Emmy,

if i was betting man i would say it's a hen because of the dark feathering on the head,

she has been trying to fly today managed to get all of 2" off the ground she is trying to get up in

the tree with mum & dad.

    Regards

    Kim

  4. Hi Everyone,

i thought i would share with you , two of this years chicks bred April started to make a nest on the floor of my outside flight amongst the gravel,

old millet sprays feathers and a small scrape in the corner, i did not pay to much attention even when 4 eggs appeared , i did not think they would be fertile due to the birds age, you guessed it 2 chicks hatched as it was a sheltered corner i decided to leave them, after ten days i managed to get in and ring the chicks, **** next day one chick was dead, after this the parents were barely seen sitting with him but he was still looking fed.

Today our surviver has fledged the nest and chases his parents on the ground under the tree and is being fed on a regular basis, i have christened this survivor "Well hard" and have attached his photo for you.

    Cheers Kim

  5. Hi Guys,

i have only been breeding for 2 years and already i have a large folder with Breeding Record sheets downloaded from ZFS website,

along with there Breeding record book, its getting messy even after 2 years.

I have been playing with Excell i have started a Workbook with a page per year and listed my birds by year ring, next step i thought was

to make stock cards on the computer these can be linked to the work book by inserting Hyperlinks to each bird.

This feels like alot of work and i am only keeping 40-50 birds, for those of you keeping 100+ birds what system are you using ??

    Cheers Kim

  6. Hi Emmy,

i have noticed if a bird is not well other birds will often pluck feathers from them,

from my experiences when i have left them alone and done nothing they do die,

from this i have concluded its best to act and seperate them,

I lost a good hen recently while she was sitting on eggs i did not act the day before when she was looking poorly.

    Best of luck

    Kim

  7. I have rung all chicks that have hatched so far this year, or rather the wife has as i have clumsy hands, we have rung them after 10 days,

any chicks a bit small we have gone back after a couple of days.

So today the first clutch were split from there parents as they are feeding themselves so i decided to fit coloured split rings so i could identify family's at a glance, when we caught them up not one had got a ZFS ring left on it's leg, 4 of them must have fallen off in the nest after ringing, when this occured last year i was lucky cos the adults threw the ring out of the nest but not this year.

Its annoying because thats 4 chicks i cannot show this year except in an adult class.

Just sharing this annoyance with you all.

  8. Hi Garyi managed to change the nestbox today when all 4 chicks were out,the original was totally disgusting, i have been hanging a bath on the cagetoday only the adults have used it so far.Mark yes last years hens had that darker head that they lost later, i could do with more Cock birds bred this year as i have 3 that have been firing blanks in the breeding cages so far this year.Regards Kim

  9. Hi Emmy, chick was bred from a Normal Cock and a CFW hen so if its a Cock it will be Normal Grey / CFW if its a Hen she will be Normal Grey i don't think there are any other mutations in there. It was the only fertile egg from the parents first round of eggs and was raised by foster parents,Regards Kim
