  1. Thank's very much Andyn, maybe one more before i will stop with her then. I will have to look for fresh blood then because the others will all be siblings. Tenacious little devils aren't they ?

  2. Before you should stop letting hens breed? . Ive allowed my original pair to have another clutch but have kept it to just two. The hen is around 2.5 years old.

  3. Thanks Andyn, having always kept Budgies ive never seen anything like this before. Ive seen the others chasing each other about and hissing but this was brutal, spiteful little monkeys when the mood takes them

IYes i put a bath on for her which was welcome.

  4. Hi, not been around for a while but hoping for a little help here.

In short, why would a male zebra Finch that has lived very happily with his female for 18 months suddenly attack her. I went in to find her covered in blood around her face and neck and he kept knocking her to the ground. I have separated them, a bit baffled by this, any idea's

  5. Well mum and dad finished feeding the baby's at the weekend, despite the begging  .  All 4 are feeding themselves well and drinking, so yesterday i moved them all into their new flight cage, everyone is very happy. Thanks for help with my first Finch breeding experience. The orange on their beaks is just starting to show at the top so i will be back for help confirming the sexes but for now a pic of my happy little family in their new home :)

  6. Thanks Andy i really appreciate your help, i will wait the 35 days at least, until weening is done to be sure. I will keep a close eye on the dad and pull him if it gets aggressive, i also have a divider for  the cage they are in if i need it :)

  7. Thanks Andy, so even if the parents birds are moving with them, i should wait past complete weening? Cock bird is chasing the eldest baby around, not all the time but on occasion, could this mean that baby is possible another cock?

  8. Hi, my baby's are 28 days old and are starting to feed themselves but are still also being fed by parents. I have a large flight cage ready for them all to go into together,  with the parents, is it too soon to move them now, will the parents continue to feed them or will it upset things too much just now, should i wait until they are fully weened.

    Thanks

  9. I saw the baby's having a nibble on millet today, took them ages to crack a seed, rolling it round in their mouths :)

I have another question, sorry  . I would like to move their cage about 2 foot so that i can install their new flight cage for when they are ready, will this upset mum and dad too much, should i wait until the baby's are fully weened.

Thanks for posting that beautiful photograph.  Glad it has all worked out for you.

I have two that have just fledged from their nest in the outside flight  but they have gone back into the nest to sleep. Now if I was their 'real' Mum I would be showing them the way into the inside flight where it's nice and warm and where they would even have a 'night light'

In the Spring when I had a few nests with chicks hatching out at the same time when they had fledged most of  the young ones went to sleep in the same nest  On one occasion there were 10 chicks in the one nest.

I love taking pics of all my birds, i have to control myself sometimes, get a bit carried away Emmy

See id be awake all night worrying about the 2 in the outside flight, my budgies and finches are in the conservatory basking in 15 degrees at night when the rest of the house is freezing :D

I love the fact that they all piled into one nest, thats so adorabubble :)

Is there any Black Cheek in the parentage?. The Pied looks to have a dark cheek patch.

Im so happy you noticed that, im a bit excited by those black cheeks, i love the look of the black cheeked ones, i think he/she could be a little corker :)

No Black Cheek in the parents.

  12. :D Im the same, i felt awful and didn't sleep much last night worrying about them . I cant put the coconut back on it was like a Nuclear Bunker and more of a health hazard than anything so it went in the bin. I popped a basket in this morning but Betty and Frank started to get jiggy again so i took it away, i dont want them to stop feeding the baby's and start nesting again. The baby's have been fine and i came to the conclusion that they dont go back to the nest in the wild so fingers crossed they be ok.

This is the new nest now, its safe :D

It'll be a while before the chicks feed themselves, though they will peck around. Millet spray is a good thing for them to practice on and I'm sure they'll enjoy that soft food.

It is recommended that 35 days go by from hatching to being ready to properly feed them selves. You will probably find one chick will be forward and start to feed from seed pot quite a few days before the 35 but I recommend making sure you see all chicks feeding even if this is post 35.

They will probably loose a little weight after separation but soon recover. If any doubt go past 35 days just so long as there isn't any aggression from parents.

    Andy

    That's great, thanks Andy.

  14. Hi, just preparing for my baby's to fledge this week, should i put an extra dish of egg food and millet on the floor for them or should they find the food the parents have around the cage, how long will the parents continue to feed them until they find their way around.

This is the egg food mum and dad have been having

OK will look forward to that. Hope you don't mind but here are two photos of Pied

One is a poser shot in a photo cage and the other is as in the cage she grew up in.

Hope it helps to familiarise. Pied for Website.jpg  IMG_20160522_175557.jpg

Just beautiful thankyou, i love them both but the right hand one is gorgeous, i dont think my little one has as much white, it seems to be just a scattering, i cant wait to see them properly.  One thing i have learnt is that a box nest box will be far easier to keep a closer eye on them, i stupidly gave them a choice when the basket didn't work between a box and a coconut, they chose the coconut, never again

Oh Oh !! another ones been bitten.:D

If you get the chance I would love to see a photo of the Pied chick. My normals have bred pied this year but they only have a white chin and some white flight feathers.

I was going to put big White to them next year and try to get proper marked Pied and increase the size at the same time

I will pop pics on as soon as they fledge for sure, im just assuming one is a pied, it is different from the others as far as i can see, a bit of a mix, im no good at mutations so you can help tell me what they all are, the first should be out mid week this coming week :)

I know that feeling - same with  me ;)

That's great news, the fact that you have different colours of chicks means that parents must be 'split' for other colours.

    Emmy

:D .  I didn't think i would be as excited with these little critters like i am with the budgies but im blown away by the different selection and sooo chuffed with the whites,i just thought they would all look like the normal parents. I can feel another addiction coming on

  18. Thankyou, there are 4 in the nest and they are indoors, all has been fine, they do indeed seem to know what they are doing, im just the slave that provides the food, worry's and shuffles off to leave them to it :D

I seem to have 2 white, 1 pied and 1 normal from a pair of normal's, surprised but very excited about that :)

  19. Hi its me again . Is it normal for both parents to sleep outside the nest at night now, the oldest baby is 10 days old and for the last three nights the male has slept outside but tonight they are both sleeping outside leaving the baby's alone, is it ok
