  1. Yes, thanks Andyn, my gut feeling was this, the oldest is 5 days now but think i will wait another 5, wasn't sure how bomb proof the zeebs were at this stage, wont take any chances :)

  2. Hi folks, just dropping in to let you know after all our troubles, we now have a nest of 4 beautiful baby Zeebs :yahoo:

Thanks for your help when i needed it :). I have an odd question now, i have brought my 7 Budgies into the conservatory from the aviary for the winter now and they are in their flight cage. I usually let them free range during the day but haven't yet because of the baby's. Will it be ok to let them out or will this disturb and worry the parents at this time if they start landing on their cage etc, i dont want to put them off now as they are doing a great job.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. 7 hours ago, Stuart whiting said:

That seems ok, it sounds like she's an inexperienced first year hen , occasionally this does happen with some birds,

give it about 1 week and if yer careful take the egg with thumb and index finger at both ends of the egg and hold upto a light bulb, if the egg looks full then all well and good and then place back in the nest,

however if the egg appears to be clear ( inside of egg ) then bin it and take out the nest,

leave for about 1-2 weeks and place the nest back in the cage with fresh nesting material  :good:

under normal circumstances if the hen is fit enough she should go back down to breed with the cock bird again :D

    Will do, thankyou :)

  4. Thanks stuart, she is incubating the lone egg, and the bead so i will see how this goes, if she eats this one i will def start taking them away. Is it common for them to just have and incubate one egg?

  5. I put a single white egg shaped bead, slightly larger than the real thing in the nest this morning, she was very interested in the said bead and tapped it around a bit, when i looked later this afternoon she had laid another egg next to it, its still there, fingers crossed

  6. So, for all my questions regarding my two breeding, i discovered this eve that the female has eaten her two eggs, i caught her doing it. Does this mean she will always be an egg eater or would she have known they were possibly no good :unknw:

  7. WW3 :D , mine are more the throw yourself round the cage while changing feeders type

Aubiouse is similar to Eazibed, perhaps i could just grab a handful and replace gradually. Ive tried to take all other nesting stuff out now because they are stacking it on top of the eggs. Unlike Buds who chuck it all out. I will get my head round it with the Zebs, thanks for help Andy :)

  8. Probably another daft question which i think i know the answer to but a bit unsure ;)

Ive quite a thick layer of Aubiose on the floor of the finches cage, what do people do when the birds are nesting re cleaning out, should i leave well alone or is it ok to clean out and replace the bedding on the floor, will it just freak them out and put them off.

With the budgies i just use layers of newspapers and take the top one out every day, think ive stitched myself up with the aubiouse

  9. Thanks so much all.

And Emmy thankyou, i couldn't just stand by and watch them die so feel i need to be prepared, just incase mum and dad go AWOL ;) . Hopefully it wont happen.

Off to read your blog :) , im still finding my way round the forum :D

  10. Ok thanks Andy :)

So the likelyhood of them abandoning them or refusing to feed them is pretty remote Stuart, sorry this is my first time breeding Zebs, ive only bred Budgies before :(

  11. Hi all, Betty and Frank have their first egg. I know its early doors and that there are no guarantees but i was just thinking i had better get some hand rearing food, just incase :(.

Could anyone recommend a good one, thankyou :)

  12. Just to let folks know, we have good poop, at last :yahoo:.  With the Avipro  and charcoal coupled with settling into their new routine were doing good. I even have them drinking from a very small bunny bottle, something ive never managed to achieve with my Budgies, clever little things these Meeps  :)

    Thanks again for your help.

  13. Thanks so much folks, their poop is still mainly water really with a tiny bit of solid. I have avipro here so will give that a go, ive never heard of the Epsom salts that's good to know about, what would be the ratio to water be please. I will also get some charcoal and mix it into the seed :)

  14. Thankyou for your advice, they are my only finches so are alone, I have today stopped green food, they just have seed and water. I'm feeling that it could be the stress of a new home and environment. Will wait see.

    Thanks again :)

  15. Hi folks, what should a health Finch poop look like.  I'm used to Budgie poop which is firm small and dry'ish. I'm new to finches and my two little ones poop is very watery, they drink loads and i put it down to that also newly settling in but I'm getting concerned now that its not right.

  16. Hello, I joined the old forum around 3 years ago to say I was thinking of getting Zebra Finches. Ive kept Budgies for many years and have an aviary of 8 plus a very old budgie of 15 in the house.

Well its taken me this long to finally get round to purchasing a lovely pair of Zebra's and they are called Betty and Frank, I have read up lots but still will have lots to learn, they will be staying with me in the house and wont be mixed with my budgies.

Looking forward to joining you all and learning as much as I can about these lovely little birds.

  17. Hi and thankyou for the warm welcome, i guess its a suck it and see situation re; keeping them together. Ive only got 4 Buds now and it was a toss up, should i buy new blood and start with the buds again or have a change and try finches and i think the finches are enticing me at the moment so i have the room in the Aviary to split a section just to be on the safe side. Im sure i will be bombarding you with my questions very soon :) .

  18. Hello im new and as yet do not have any Finches but keep Budgies which i have bred in the past. I am interested in starting with Finches and have joined so that i can learn more about them :). I have a 10 by 8 Aviary but would be starting with one pair of Finches in the house initially. The Aviary would undergo some alterations so that the Finches would be separate from the Budgies eventually.
