  1. Thanks Emmy it is encouraging to hear about your canary leading a happy life after all your care.

I phoned the 'emergency' vet today but just got a message so will probably wait until Tuesday now. I have a feeling they wont be overly wonderful with a tiny creature, they are excellent with dogs, horses and even chickens. I'll still see what they say though.

Little bird still seems very chirpy and is eating so that is all good. Poor little soul, it is such a shame it happened.

  2. That is hopeful news.

I'll see if I can speak to anyone at the surgery tomorrow. Why do these things always happen on a bank holiday. There will be an emergency vet on call so I'll see if they can do anything.

Now you have said dislocated I wonder if that is my little one's problem. When she tries to perch it hangs behind her.  It looks very like it could be dislocated but having said that I have never seen either a dislocated leg nor a broken one on a bird so for me very difficult to tell.

Many thanks for the info and more than ever for hope. She is very perky so has that going for her at least.

  3. I am not new to this forum but I am very new to posting and I apologise that my first post is a cry for help.

I went into my aviary this morning and a little zebra finch appears to have a broken leg. She has always been a bit runty, probably one that shouldn't have survived, but bless her she did and lives a normal life with the others even though she is smaller and never looking quite as 'blooming' as the others.

As said, this morning she has a broken leg and I found her unable to balance on the perches and when she tried the leg was dangling behind her.

After much difficulty (she can fly just fine) I did manage to catch her and put her in a cage in a warm and very quiet room in the house. She panicked a bit and still had the problem with the perches so I removed these and put a little cardboard shelf covered with hemp bedding (stuck on with hot melt glue so she has something to grip on) in there in place of a perch. She has eaten some millet and looks calmer and is quite perky.

I live in North Devon and am miles away from an avian vet the nearest being in Exeter. If absolutely necessary I would take her there but is there anything a vet could do?

Any advice at all would be most gratefully accepted.  I wonder if anyone has had a finch with a broken leg before or knew of one and could tell me the outcome.

  4. Huge thanks Gary. That is just the info I have been looking for and unable to find until now.I don't think I want to breed them, I would like to learn a bit more about 'bird husbandry' first. I'm doing OK so far and might be better leaving the that side of things to those with all the experience. So supposing I bought males, would four or five get on OK. Also would you advise they all were introduced to their new home together or is it possible to buy a couple of males for now and add more later. The next question would be does anyone know a reputable breeder within reasonable distance to us here in South East Cornwall. I am about twenty miles west of Plymouth.

  5. Thanks for your welcome Gary.I have had a look at the Zebra Finches in your Gallery and they are such beautiful birds.I would love a few in my aviary but just need to know if they would fit in or not.I'm looking forward to some answers to my question in the 'discussion section', I'm hoping someone will have some advice for me.

  6. I am very new to birds so I apologise in advance if I am not using the correct terminology or if some of my questions are obvious to you experts. Two years ago an injured ring neck dove landed in our garden, he had very deformed feet. He thrived but his feet remained unable to grip so we built him an 8' x 18' aviary, approx 50:50 flight and inside. (the inside is a brick building with a little heating in the winter. We bought him another ring neck dove for company, then on a friends recommendation introduced eight Diamond Doves, a male Canary and a female Chaffinch.I have been advised that Zebra Finches could be introduced into the aviary and having 'Googled' I would absolutly love to have some, they are very pretty birds.I have heard a few conflicting warnings about the species. I have been told that you must have five or more or they will kill each other. Another bit of advice was to have all the same sex. In fact I am getting very confused.I wonder if anyone could first of all advise me if they think Zebra Finches would settle with the birds I already have?If so, how many and what sexes (or sex) would you advise me to have?

  7. Hello,I'm Lyn, and new to your forum as well as being relatively new to birds. An injured dove in our garden with deformed feet has led to a mixed aviary and for me a joyous introduction to the world of birds. I am on a sharp learning curve and eager to glean knowledge where I can.I do have a question concerning Zebra Finches and will post it in a more appropriate section of the forum.
