I could not agree more, in-fact I have come to the conclusion that the zebra finch is now in over breed,Last year I ask the question, how many pairs with I need to start breeding with, the answer came back thirty two should give you a decent start or words to that effect, how many birds do you think that would breed, two rounds to each pair, lets say that the average is four chicks to a pair, now you do the maths, Last year I attended the Stafford show, looking for birds to start my breeding program, I had five hundred pounds to spend on birds, I purchased one bird at £15.00

There was one other that i liked , but i missed it. I was offered two more at £60 each, they did not come up to my viewing standard, I walked away with the one bird.I had made contact with a member of the society and arranged to view birds at his aviary, I came away with five pairs of good quality birds, I let them grow, in March of this year i began breeding I only used three pairs to breed twenty birds. but they are good quality, i shall let them grow and breed with them next spring. I shall buy in three more birds for next year to get some out cross. once my birds are five weeks old they join the others in there aviary, cocks/ hens which they have access to the out side aviary again cocks/ hens, showing my birds at zebra finch club level will I guess take me another two years at least. but I will know that the breed has come first and not the breeding.

  2. This is my first year breeding and I am very pleased with the overall quality of my birds, I only breed twenty birds from a mating of three pairs, and that is because I would prefer to wait longer for results without the over breeding, my aim was to improve my normal cocks/hens. The results have been very good somehow I have managed to get some size and good looks from the pairings.

I only had one good size cock bird which I had arranged to buy at last years Stafford show, (cant make this year a sad passing in the family more important) I then had the good fortune to buy some birds from Broughy ,he told me that they were from good blood lines, and from the looks of my young birds he was quite right, one of the hens he sold me was the perfect mother, and produced some nice birds ( no pictures at the moment) I do not think that i will be showing at the club level for at least a couple more years so there is a lot to look forward to.

if you take the eggs out of the nest box every time she lays, and replace it with a false egg every time she lays, then after she has laid the last egg replace them, (and make sure that you turn the eggs every day) they will all hatch together.

  4. If my birds were stolen i would be devastated as i have put so much work in and hoping that my first year breeding in 2012 will work out OK, but i do have security, but that does not always work, i mean people still break the law as we see on TV, with all the cameras looking straight at them , some of them just give them a wave, without thinking of the harm they have just coursed.Kevin

  5. Why don't you put a suggestion to the zfs committee Trev if they see a lot of entries and interest they may make up another class, anything that brings new blood can only be good for the hobby.i for one would like to see all of theses new mutations on the show bench.Regards Kevin
