  1. yes give egg food daily along with usual seed. If u use dry egg food ,moisten it and replace it a couple of times a day as it tends to go hard when it drys out. Or u can buy moist egg food so u dont need to refresh it as often.

  2. Yes of course they recognise their own parents and siblings :-)  My fledglings that are together from 2 pairs always roost with their brothers and sisters and not the others. So cute

  3. Hi Calandlew,

I use Haiths foreign finch mix too. I give them as much as they can eat so i have little waste. I add a little finch tonic seed mix to it twice a week which Haiths also sell. I will be changing to a complete mix for them though as it saves me having to use 2 different seed mixes.

  5. Lol Kerry,

Yeah cats and little fast moving birdies DONT mix. I have a cat but she is kept well away from the aviary. And she knows she is not aloud near it when we are here. When we are not here she is shut in the kitchen :)   I dont think it matters even if a kitten is brought up with the finch. Cats love to catch fast moving things and finches are too small and delicate.

  6. Hi barold

I used to let them out when they were in a cage. I just used a Big catching net and eventually got them. They soon caught on that seeing me pick up the catching net ment  back in cage time lol. They are in an aviary now so i dont need to let them out. It is purely your choice though. If u think they are getting fat, let em out but make sure you have the time to get em back in again

  7. Hi Adam,

Good to see you have turned things around, just shows how plan B (feeders) can help out. One word of caution mind, when possible let the zebs rear their own young. I beleive that young birds can adopt the social skills of their parents and as they mature come time for them to re-produce, be unable to attract the opposite sex due to "speech" difficulty. I have had one ocasion when a young cock had the song of a Bengalese and the hen he was with was not impressed at all. Plus remember we need to let them see what being a parent bird is all about. Most of my pairs are now rearing their own chicks, infact some have 6 in the nest.

    Regards,

    Nick

    Hi Nick,

My 5 zebra chicks have been reared by their parents but i have just 1 parsons finch in the same room and 3 of my fledglings have started to sing like the parsons!! WTF?? (excuse the bad language)

  8. Hi Nick,

This is my first breeding season. I only have 2 pairs but 1 pair laid 4 eggs. All 4 were fertile but 1 got knocked out the nest so only got 3 chicks out of them. The other pair had 5 eggs, only 2 were fertile and both chicks survived. I think maybe this male isnt as fertile as he could be as he was only 7 months old. All 5 chicks are now fledged and doing well :)

  9. Hi Kerry,

Just had a look and yes both chicks tails look the same. I dont know anything about zebra finch tail markings. Have you got a pic of your one with the barring so i can see what this looks like please?

  11. Hi Emmy,

I cant advise on what to do about your current situation with the eggs but just wanted to share with you what i have done. My hens have started to lay more eggs also b4 their chicks have fledged. When my chicks were about 2 weeks old i saw an egg in their nest, as i can see inside their nest from outside the aviary. I removed the egg and candled it. I caught it early as it was clear. In the bin it went and didnt feel guilty as nothing had developed. From then on i checked the nest every day and discarded of the newly layed eggs. Hope this helps :)

  12. Hi guys,

My normal grey cock and black cheek hen have produced chicks which have black full cheeks like the hen does. I wasnt expecting them to be so full or black with the chicks being normals split for black cheek. I thought their cheeks would be duller and not cover the full cheek. Will the cheeks stay like this or are they likely to go duller and less full after their first moult? I will be gutted if they do. Will try to get some pics of them 2morrow as i didnt have time today and now they are back in the nest.
