  1. I have been handfeeding a zebra finch chick for nearly 3 weeks.. Buck is fully feathered, flying and picking at seeds but not cracking them, will he wean himself or how do I do this? First time handrearing a bird.

    Thanks, Stephen.

  2. Basicaly what I do is if its grown myself (organically) I'll give them some to try and watch them. I'll google it first to see but usually all is good

  3. Since the previous forum went down I sold all my flock of over 20 finches and moved on to budgies and two red faced lovebirds. Hopefully I'll have space in the future to get more zebbies although I did keep on BC hen as she had an lump on the wing which I removed and she seems to be recovering well.

  4. I am removing them so when the chicks have all their feathers I'll let her go broody as itll be just the end of summer so she has autumn to brood and hopefully stop laying for the winter.

Its so easy to see the feathers on yellow chicks compared to darker chicks. Their so adorable and great to watch, hope all goes well with them :)

  5. Its unbelievable for such little legs they go about 6 feet in a few seconds.

There still scared when I walk in but after that they come up pretty close with dad which is pretty good seeing as the parents use to jump 5-6 feet high at the sight of the door opening.

Stay tuned for feather pictures tomorrow :D

  6. I chose the lid as it has a small dept around the edges so they could fit their beak in while standing on either the lid or the ground.

I read about marbles in their water but their doing fine the way they are so not too bad :)

  7. Faracat   I cant wait till she lays again as I'll be definitely keeping that box maybe making more the exact same as it for future pairs. Getting very optimistic here.

Emmy Its great that they feed themselves as I don't have to depend on parents and I watch them to see how their coming along and when the mother calls them to go under I know its time to leave. She doesn't want me there :(

Tony For a camera phone they were good may rob my fathers expensive camera (he's a photographer) to get them in great detail.

Thanks guys and from what I read the male's don't usually help with the chicks, is that true?

  8. I've had two buttons for a while now and when they started laying I took their eggs from them as I read they hardly hatch their own chicks. When my cockatiel's started incubating infertile eggs I replaced them with button quail eggs which got so close but failed to hatch.

So I put in a old finch box with a small bit of the roof removed and shavings inside for the eggs. I left the eggs to see if she would incubate them and hey presto I have five little buttons waddling around.
