  1. Hi Guys , was wondering if any of use guys have used the red millet seed as i have only used the yellow millet.Do the finches like the red would any of you's recommend it?RegardsGillian
Hi, This is a weird one, i agree that red millet is not their favourite where there is a mixed seed on offer, now you put a spray of red millet in and they will strip it as fast as you look at it. anyone got an answer for this! Trevor.

  2. Hi, Just addding to your breeding in oct onwards, today i cleaned my cages out and in one cage i've got a pair now sitting on 6 eggs (which i was going to take box away this weekend). Due to work i only feed in the dawn and don't get home in daylight so weekends is really only the time i really get to check. Also in the aviary my c p quail are sitting on 5 eggs + young zebs in boxes. So i think that your idea is something really to think about. Trevor

  3. Hi Guys,Thanks for the replies, what are your thoughts on breeding from October onwards and resting the stock in the summer. My theory was the summer temperatures can be extreme with highs of 30+ degrees in the day, this leading to the possibility of soft-food going off and chicks dehydrating?. Then some nights could be quite chilly. Good nests of four or five chicks plus parents also make for a hot environment and the nests can get quite messy and a breeding ground for bacteria? Second theory of breeding from October, say until March means that by using artificial daylight and heat it is easier to make a more stable environment for the birds, meaning it is easier to keep the shed warm than cool it down?I know for exhibition birds this means some breeders birds would have last years rings but for us its not too much of an issue as long as we can produce some quality birds.Thanks,Nick.
I've got a small set up of 13 cages, for this year i've had 78 youngsters. Now looking at what you've posted, a high percentage of my youngsters were hatched in the earlier and latter part of my season more to the latter. Always when there is rain in the air i found the birds were in breeding mood. Through the hotter months they deffinatly slowed down. At the moment i,ve got 2 cages with young + 1 pair of timors sitting. I reckon if we could get the light/temp right i think you would get better results with each round. This is really something to think about. Trevor.

  4. hi interesting thought, i'm looking at it from a different veiw, first of all i don't show zebs i colour breed so a section of my year doesn't incorperate a showing section. To make things simple, i sort out my breeding stock (but not pairing up yet), maintenance on cages and make any improvements from previous year Jan/Mar, then the breeding section Apr/Sept and finaly the rest period as they finish having young which is now Oct/Dec. Trevor

  5. Today i have put 4 zebs into the aviary (2 x Fawn & 2 x Fawn Cheek), checked my cages and i have a cage with 4 x Grey Cheeks (all white type 1 is crested) another cage has 6 young (3 x grey, 1 x Grey Cheek, and 2 x Grey Cheek (white type inc 1 crested G/C). Plus 3 cages with 1 - 5 day old chicks 10 of, which makes a total of 20 young in the shed. As i said in a previous post this 2010 season is definately the best. Trevor

  6. Hi Scott, By accident last year i had 2 seperate pairs of G/C's breed in my aviary, with a total of 3 young all were blind. The pairs were young from the same year about 5 months old and i had put them in the aviary to colour up. But those birds are in my shed this year paired with greys and no blind chicks. But i have tried puting dominant partners with g/c's ie crests and bf and still no blind ones. Regards Trevor.

  7. Best year for a few years now, actually bred target colours which i set out at start of the year. I've only a small set up with 13 cages but have turned out 44 so far, with 2 boxes with 2-5 day old chicks not counted yet. 5 cages have not bred, plus the aviary i reckon i've passed 100.

  8. Hi all, I've just aquired 2 pairs of Timors has anyone bred these? any are there any difference between breeding them and standard zebs? They are in cages and i know not to mix em with standard zebs. Is incubation the same, and food when they've got young. Any info would be much appreciated. Regards Trevor.

  9. Good Evening all, I've kept zebs for 30+ years now and always learning about the hobby, i used to show but time is needed to show competively and i don't have enough of this, so i breed zebs as a hobby. But over the last few years i've got into colour breeding which i enjoy 100%, i mostly go for grey cheeks in my shed and this year i've managed to hatch greycheek pieds, crested greycheeks and crested greycheek pieds, as well as greycheeks. Loads of different types in my aviary as well. Anyway enough of me hope i can be of help to someone in the future. Regards Trevor. Ps i've got a question on the grey section if anyone can help.
