  1. I thought they were parrolettes too when I first saw them but the breeder told me lots of people make that mistake and they are definitely the smallest of the love bird parrots.  I have read up about them and it seems they are quite rare birds and could be difficult to breed.  I was also told not many people breed that variety here in Scotland. So its going to be a case of 'fingers crossed'

  2. Another new variety to my bird shed.

(Agapornis Canus) ie the Madagastar lovebird parrot. I was told they are the smallest parrots. They are about the same size as the zebra finch but have a much wider wing span therefore can fly very quickly (guess that will make it more difficult to catch them (lol) ) They seem to be very nervous little birds so I'll try to keep them in a quiet area for a while.  I can pair them together April/May so fingers crossed I'll get some chicks. The cock birds have the silver head and hens are shades of green. ( Photo doesn't do them justice)

Noticed you were from Scotland ,think I'm on other side of forth . I have no real preference as to colours will just see what's around when things are complete. May get some pointers from you as regards sources for stock in little while if that's OK.

Dave I take  it you are on the Dundee side then?

I'll gladly help you if I can re sources for stock just post me when you want information.

  4. Just an update. There's been a vanishing act in the inside flight.  No eggs now in the diamond dove's nest. No eggs on floor of  inside flight, no broken egg shells either. This happened last year too when the diamond doves  had laid eggs in a nest in the outside flight.

Today I noticed my 4 cockatiels that are in the aviary, looking into all the nest boxes that are in the outside flight .

(I'm bringing in those nest boxes because I don't want any birds to begin nesting there )

I'm thinking its the cockatiels that may be stealing the eggs from the nests.

  5. I have 5 Diamond Doves in my aviary with zebra finches, canaries and 4 cockatiels. Plenty room for them all.

A pair of my diamond doves decided  to build a nest but the area they picked couldn't have been more unsuitable.  There's plenty of other safe areas in the inside flight but they chose this tiny corner in the inside flight and Yes! they have eggs in that tiny nest. Every time I check the birds I expect to find the eggs on the floor but so far they seem to be OK. It may be a different situation if the eggs hatch I doubt if chicks would stay in that tiny space.

My next job will be to fix up something below the nest to catch any chick that may fall out (if they do hatch)and have something warm inside that container just in case it falls out during the night.

(I have just bought some hand warmers that keep warm for 10 hours -(not plugged into any electrical supply or batteries so that may work)

  6. I have used a canary pan before in the quiko cages for a pair of Bengalese but this time I put the nest box on the door so I could keep a check on progress I can look in without disturbing the birds.  problem with that though is you cant put a bath up.

  7. They now have 3 eggs in their nest (would have been 4 but I removed the one with the double yolk) but no sign of them incubating the eggs as yet. I have then in a single Quiko cage and I was thinking I would perhaps be better changing the cage and rehoming them in a double breeder? Do you think this would make any difference to them breeding successfully?

  8. Unfortunately the previous clutch of eggs my penguins had didn't hatch - don't really know what happened because the eggs were fertile but  embryos didn't survive (that was the clutch where one of the eggs had a double yolk.)

They now have laid some more eggs and one of those eggs is another with a double yolk. Is this a common thing to happen?

  9. Hi Zeb

So sorry to hear about what happened with Jimmy.  It's heart breaking when something like this happens because we do get attached to those little birds.  Unfortunately I have no idea what could have caused this but I  just wanted you to know I understand why you are trying your hardest to discover the reason for Jimmy's death.

I'm sure one of the members may be able to give you some advice.  Hope all  your other birds will be OK.

    Please keep us posted.

  10. Update:  Well I've found no dead chicks in the cage or the nest  and it looks as though there has been only  6 chicks in the nest -the first one fledged today.  If this pair breed again they will definitely be given a much bigger nest

5682f76783da0_Dec27th2015Bengalesechicks  the chick in the front of the nest is a late developer and just beginning to feather up. At least it will be kept warm.

    Emmy,

                NOT BUYING !!! ???????

Theres more chance of the Sahara getting flooded,

I shouldn't have made that post about NOT buying (lol)

I did sell quite a few of my finches and one of the members had a pair for sale I really liked and as I didn't get them at Stafford I          thought to myself 'better late than never'  hen - bb/orange  cock- orange/bb be interesting to see what they produce.

:lol:Trevor the way the weather is going the Sahara may well get flooded :lol:

ps that is definitely the last I've no more cages free now-- just please don't ask how many cages I do have:rolleyes::lol:

  12. Thanks Andy,

So does that mean I just have a 50/50 chance that some of the chicks will be crested ?

I have another pair where one is crested (white hen) and it's paired up with a BB

Any idea what colour I could expect from them?

  13. Thanks Andy,

The previous eggs they had weren't fertile so its looking better for this clutch .  Only one of the penguins is crested and I don't know if the other is split for that or not. (I was told you shouldn't breed two visual crested birds)  I think they will look after the chicks if the eggs hatch because they have fostered 2 chicks from another pair that had abandoned their nest. If I don't get any crested chicks from this pair I'm definitely NOT buying anymore birds now :D BUT

I got a lovely surprise tonight when I opened one of my present from my two daughters .

I'm getting 16 birds--'Bluebird;  Nuthatch;  Cardinal and  Goldfinch (4 of each)  but the great thing about them is I don't need to feed them I've to MAKE them It's  a 3D Paper bird kit.  I'm over the moon with that going to have a great time making them:good:

Hope Santa is good to you'

  14. The  pair of penguins (one of the crested)  I bought at Stafford in October now  have 6 eggs in their nest I took a photograph of the eggs tonight and candled the eggs using the computer Looks like 4 of the eggs are definitely fertile the remaining two may have been the last two laid so will check them again later. I'm hoping I'll get some crested chicks from this. :D
