Do the taping bit on the side of nest and count how many gapes open for feeding.

 I've tried that Andy but before I get round them all some of them have already hidden their head.  Guess they're trying to let me know they  just want to be  left alone. As soon as I know how many I'll let you know. :good:

  2. So sad to have that happen Sarah have you tried giving them some supplements in their drinking water, from time to time if any of mine look a bit 'under the weather' I give them some 'Guardian Angel' it can be put in their drinking water or on their food. Have you thought about perhaps changing their seed- I'm now giving mine versele-laga foreign finch plus all the other extra things they normally get as well and they love broccoli and cress too.

Guardian Angel --www.CareCo.com This is what it says on the label :Comprehensive in water or on-food supplement for sick or stressed birds. Immune support, prebiotics, vitamins and minerals  long term energy.

Hope things get better for you.

  3. Hi Andy

It's definitely one pair they have been  in a cage by themselves quite a while before any eggs were laid and the annoying thing is I cant remember how many eggs were finally in the nest   but I did know there were quite a few laid. I'm thinking there is at least 7 :unknw:chicks in there. I've a feeling I'll not know for sure how many until they fledge:D

  4. Thanks for the reply Andrew Someone has told me its OK to use the Savlon but not too much of  it.  I'll try to get some of the tea tree ointment always good to have it handy just in case its needed in an emergency. :good:

  5. Thanks for answering Andy I've put him in a cage on his own so I've had a good look at it and the brown patch is definitely not mud etc. it seems the beak has been 'damaged' it's just I couldn't remember if it was safe to use savlon or if there was any other product available to help heal the beak.

Glad you got the information about the camera hope you will be posting lots of photos when you get the new lens.;)

  6. I've just noticed that one of my cock normal zebra finches has a small brown patch on its upper beak looks as though its be damaged somehow.  Any ideas to what this could be?

Would it be OK to put Savlon cream on this to stop any infection setting in?  Thinking back I can remember someone mentioned 'witch hazel ' but I cant remember what it was to be used for.

  7. What about Rich Tea Biscuits does the same apply with them re the salt etc  (Don't  have a pkt. here just now so cant check)

I do have digestive biscuits and now after reading the posts I have a great excuse to use the remaining digestive biscuits I have --NO! I'm not giving them to the birds in the aviary There's only one  'Bird' that's going to have them, with butter and a mug of coffee and that's ME!;)

  8. Welcome to the forum Steve I think that's fantastic what you are proposing to do.  I'm sure your son will just love helping you but beware it's him that shall be showing you the best way to do things and from past experience he will probably be right

Hope you both enjoy your new hobby and hoping you'll soon  find the birds you are looking for.

  9. Hope the other two are fertile too Sarah.  You have some lovely birds there. Who knows I may get a couple of budgies to keep indoors (most of my birds are out in my bird sheds now and I really miss not having them in the house -but I seem to be the only one that misses them in here,  everyone else, family and visitors  are  smiling now and saying 'now we can hear what we are saying to each other and don't have compete with the birds' (Lol)

Forgot to ask is your 'guard dog' lol  a long haired Chihuahua, (looks so like the one I had he died age 15 just over two years ago)

  10. Sorry to hear that you lost that chick Trevor I'm beginning to wonder if its anything to do with the weather I've lost some too and 'Julie's' one year old Kakariki died today and it had been OK in the morning.

  11. Thank You amf,

I would like to get the remaining 3 younger ones into the sheds too but it will depend on if I can get two pairs of the older ones to agree with each other and share a cage  I'll need to do a bit more organising - meantime I think they are OK in their hutch but weather has taken a turn for the worse here today -snow and VERY cold

  12. Sad day today -when I went out this morning to check the birds/quail etc. I found one of my OAP quails had died.   Don't know if it was just old age or if the drop  in temperature had anything to do with it  - they were in good sturdy hutch with plenty of areas to shelter from wind etc. I now have moved all the Texan White quails into my bird sheds  they are in 3 large rabbit cages (cant put them altogether into  one cage or it would be WW3 lol) at least now no matter how cold it gets they will be OK as both sheds are heated.

I knew I should have bought a larger shed !

So that's me down to 11 Texan White quails now .

  13. That's a pity you only got one chick out of the 6 eggs but you did get one and maybe next time the results will be better. Was this the first time they have had eggs?

Wishing you 'good luck' with the other two.

  14. Nick I think this link is a similar insulation to what Andy used - I used this in my new bird shed just recently-  the shed isn't fully insulated just waiting to find out if it would need more but so far its working fine, it was a bit expensive though.                                              http://www.ecohome-insulation.com/?i=39714

I haven't covered the insulation with plywood didn't think it was necessary - you can see this in photo 1.  Photo 2 I've teased out a bit to show you the thickness there's layers of something like tinfoil between the fibre parts . Fixed it up using staples and easily cut with scissors.
