  1. Thanks Andy and Gary,

I must admit I do  feel a  bit apprehensive putting Hamish in with the Bengalese but I don't have to think about that meantime because the Bengalese are still showing no interest in the nests.

The  hospital cage I was given is a BIG help this time-- it takes away all the guessing re keeping the temperature stable etc.  For the humidity  I have put in a dish with water  it safe enough to do this on this occasion because Hamish can't get near it.

It's till early days yet -(he's 6days old now!)  just hope he makes it.

  2. Maybe I shouldn't say too much at this point Andy but I see a difference in the chick already - this time I'm using Kaytee hand rearing food - it's easier to mix up. The other difference this time is having the hospital cage - a member of the bird group gave it to me as he didn't use it anymore and there's no light showing as there was with the brooder I used.

Going out now to try and capture my Bengalese  in the outside flight. (lol)

If they have any sense they'll stay inside it very cold here today.

  3. The reason I'm keeping the blog going Andy is because I want to have a record of Billie's growth. I'm glad you're enjoying reading it.

I have been able to 'burb' others but in Billie's case I think it was a bit more than that I think he wasn't digesting the food properly and therefore vet had to try to empty remaining food from its crop. Even although Billie looks? ok I'm still worrying about him. Don't think I'll relax until he starts eating seeds etc.

  4. Re position of photos Just remembering the same happened with Andy when he was posting some competition photos .

I think all that extra light will make a difference. I leave lights on in the shed all day -dread getting the electric bill this time EEHH!!

That's where the led lights will be better seems they cost very little to run.

  5. I guess Billie will be calling his cushion 'Mama' lol

Andy Hopefully he'll be calling me that not the cushion (lol)

When Billie is a little bit bigger he wont have the cushion I've got a little teddy bear lined up for him  lol

Joking apart the cushion is actually giving him quite a bit of support which I think will help to strengthen its legs. His head is still a bit 'wobbly' at times.(lol) Forgot to weigh him when he hatched. Will be recording his weight starting tomorrow.

  6. What a start you have had to 2015.

I would have done the same as you with the mouse -set it free.

I know we don't want mice/rats near our aviaries but I wouldn't have been able to kill the rat either.  I probably would have taken it away into the woods and let it go free.

(It's OK if everyone thinks I've 'lost the plot' because my family would agree with you all  (lol) but I don't like to kill anything.

  7. Trevor I was thinking along those lines today about removing the eggs and putting in false ones. I have removed one already and its in the incubator.

I think what's happening is when they are going back into the nest box they are landing on the eggs.  I noticed tonight they  have demolished the  perch that was inside the nest box .

Re the egg that I patched up, when having a good look at it today the yolk  was too badly damaged so I have removed it from the incubator. But I thought it was worth a try.

Only thing I'm a bit worried about is if they will accept the young if they haven't hatched them out in the nest.

  8. Hi Stephen,

    Thanks for the comment.

I doubt that egg will hatch. Tonight  I've had a closer look at the photos I have taken and I think the yolk of the egg has burst, but I'm leaving it for a few days to make sure - I'll take some photos as the days go on.

The parents that  have those eggs are the ones that stopped feeding their chicks and I had to hand rear their  chicks so I doubt they would accept any chick back into their nest.
