  1.   On the other post we were joking about spraying the cages with all sorts of different perfumes etc and now you're on to make up!! What shade of lipstick did you use and what was the brand name? ;) Joking apart, I take it your post was genuine and not a joke. I've never heard of that before so does that not harm the bird when they preen themselves?Emmy

  2. Helen They may not all come at the same time I noticed ebay has changed now and you put things in a basket like Amazon and some of the oils are from different suppliers but I've already had a reply from one saying it had already been dispatched.Emmy

  3. I got some 'star anise' (its what is used in Chinese cooking) today and I ground some down and put just a little in the bottom of the cage. You definately wouldn't need very much aniseed in the sand its a really strong 'aroma' (going all posh now) Just hope that this type of aniseed wont do them any harm.Emmy

  4. Watch out Paul you may just drop it when it shouts back at you telling you just to speak English because you are making a proper mess of Zebra talk and it doesnt understand a chirp you are saying. ;)  ;) EmmyI whistle to mine and they just sit their and put their heads to the side and look at me as though they're thinking "She's not the full shilling".

  5. the ingrediants are aqua, eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint, clove, geranium and thyme
(guess 'aqua' is the water you will mix the oil with)Using the link Gary put up to Dave's post about the essential oils, this is the list of oils that Dave listed.Tonight I have just ordered them from Ebay - total cost £10.96 free p/p. just typed in 'essential oils' and a whole list came up - thyme was on the 2nd page.Emmy

  6. Went out today and bought some aniseed and when I was there got some few other odds and ends for the birds. When I got home got everthing prepared to mix the aniseed with sand and oyster grit, and thought to myself, what a lovely smell there's going to be when I open up the bag with the aniseed.Bag opened!! No smell whatsoever!! Had a closer look at the label and on the bag and it said LINSEED!!!So I guess, at least I hope, I'll be able to mix this in with their seed mixture.Guess I'll need to have another visit to specsavers B):) Emmy

  7. Thanks Mark and Dave for those ideas. The lavendar I was meaning mark was the flowers you take from the lavendar plant the type you dry to make 'lavendar bags' etc Lilac is a different thing. I have a lilac tree in my garden too so I'll remember that when its in flower. Were the birds searching for the aniseed in the sand?Emmy

  8. Emmy There is a very good show at markinch in ether october or november dont know how close that is for you
Hi AllanI'm not too far from there. Have never noticed any pubicity about that. The one that used to be held in our village bowling green hall folded up a few years ago. Do you know who organises the one in Markinch?Emmy

  9. Hi Allan Nice to find something happening North of the Border.Just discovered a couple of weeks ago that on the last Sunday of each month there is a bird sale at the Coaltown of Balgonie in Fife so far I've still to discover if they ever have any 'shows' On my first visit there to get another Zebra Finch, or 2 canaries didnt realise that its much wiser if you go to get the birds first then get the food later- so when I got back to get the birds they were all sold and I finished up coming home with 3 quails!! a slight differnce in the size of the ones I intended to buy ;)  Wishing your and your group Good Luck Emmy

  10. KrissyAlthough I've kept zebra F. for years it wasnt until the the brood that hatched out in December that I realised later that one of them seemed to be 'singing' the others just sounded like a sqeaky toy :) It was lovely listening to HIM --from other members here I discovered after all those years that only the male Zebra Finch has a 'type of song' so I guess if your wee bird is 'singing' it will be a male.Emmy

  11. Emmy are you shore that they are 2 hen one cock bird
Now here's a new way to tell the sex of quails: I look at their legs and the one that has a 'ring' on its leg is the male :)  The person I bought them from told me he only 'rings' the males so its easier to identify them when it comes to sorting them out. He assured me I had two females and one male.Helen and Peter thanks for your replies and Peter, yes you are correct they do poo a lot- just a pity someone couldnt invent a 'toilet' for birds (plus training instructions in bird talk) they'd make a fortune!!Emmy

  12. Thanks everyone, Guess my family will be getting the eggs. (That's if they lay any) Just cant see myself using them, I wouldn't eat quail's eggs when I was in France so there's little chance of me changing now. Just put me down as a fussy eater :p As they are only about 10 weeks old so I'll have a while yet before eggs appear so that gives me time to think about changing my mind but somehow I dont think I will :) (Bet my zebras will be relieved when I tell them about this post   ) Emmy

  13. YES Mark you do answer quickly and ARE quick to pick up on things ;) ;) :p:lol:;) :lolBut that's good for the forum isnt it? :)   As I have Texan Whites and I guess they will be larger than the cpq therefore I take it their eggs may be a bit larger would I still be able to foster them out? Why are 'Bengies' said to be better at being 'foster parents?' Does this mean I would need to get a pair of Bengies?Emmy

  14. Its ME Confused again! Is cpq a quail's egg? (havent quite caught on to all the 'shorhand symbols' yet)If it is, is that egg not about twice the size of a zebra's egg? (rephrase that before Mark picks up on it)zebra Finch's egg! :) So do I have this correct:- IF the zebra finch sits on the quail's egg and it hatches you would need to remove the baby quail immediately from the nest - I believe quails are just like chickens and feed themselves when they hatch out, but would still need to be kept warm. Why are 'Bengies' said to be better at being 'foster parents?'If the baby quail hatched out and wasnt removed from the nest would the foster parents feed it just like they would their own chick?Sorry about all the questions just very interested just in case my quails start laying.Emmy

  15. Thanks PaulGuess I learn my lessons the hard way. I just felt sorry for 'Lucky' (that's the one I had to hand feed for a day) and that's why I left it in the cage beside the 'parents' but I guess that's what's happened the new chick must have been suffocated. And here was me thinking that 'Lucky' was helping the parents by taking its turn sitting on the nest. One thing for sure I wont make that mistake twice.I wont be letting them breed again meantime think they need arest.Emmy
