  1. Trevor I should have said that the top bird and the third bird are the same bird and the 2nd and the 4th are the same bird. (Wasnt trying to trick anyone but it was just I didnt think when I downloaded the photos to say that it was photographs of just 2 birds :) ps you matched them up perfectly***** to you :D Thanks again I have another 'white? one with a dark head so I guess she will be a fawn cfw as well. If the fawn cfw had been a male what colour of cheek patches would it have? Have just noticed on the 2nd from top photo there seems to be faint colour on its cheek patch do females have this?Emmy

  2. I do know they are not exhibition standard birds but now that they're a big bigger am I correct in thinking I've got 'fawn lightbacks'? this is what it was thought when they were younger. I know I've also got a normal cock male didnt get his photo today (guess he's a bit camera shy :) )Feb_13_2012_no_11_cropped.jpgFeb_13_2012_no_15_cropped.jpgfeb_13_2012_no_6_cropped.jpgfeb_13th_2012_no_4_Cropped.jpgEmmy

  3. Hi KrissyKnow the feeling its really exciting. I started again by buying a pair of finches in November and they gave me a lovely Christmas present (hatched out 4 lovely chicks) 2nd brood not been so lucky but have one wee survivor.Beginning to feel its like when I had pet rabbits, they seem to multiply overnight :( :lol:I do have a place where I can sell them if I get too many but once they're out of the nest if I give them 'names' !!!!! that's it!! they're here to stay!! Emmy

  4. Hi Mark I only fed it (practically just liquid) that one and only time when they were completely ignoring it because they were distressed and there was nothing at all in its crop and it was cold. I know its better to let nature take its course, when the parent birds destroy one of their brood usually its been found when this happens there had been something wrong with the chick but it hadnt been 'nature' that caused this to happen with 'Lucky' (it's been christened :(;) )it was because I had to move their cage so it wasnt because there was anything wrong with the chick it was the circumstances surrounding it. Helen I agree with you,to be so so tiny

    they are little toughies
:D Guess I've learned something from this though, like your wife Mark, I've been very apprehensive about ringing the young chicks but after handling 'Lucky' next lot- I'm going to have a go at putting rings on them. (:(:(;) although I've still to make up my mind which 'jewellers' to go to to buy those 'rings':lol:)

  5. Just to give you an update on my little chick. It looks just great this morning and its eyes have opened and what a difference that has made. Its looks as though its feathers are going to be pretty dark maybe get a surpirse with this tough little survivor. I have moved all the cages back to their original room and it was unbelievable how quickly the birds all settled down again. There was no panic with the birds when they were put back in the original room and they went on feeding the chick as though nothing had happened. This is the chick when I had to feed it for a day when it was just a few days old.Feb_2012_3_or_4_days_old.jpgEmmy

  6. Thanks PaulI think perhaps its too early to let them have another brood so soon. I'm thinking of swapping the cages and separating 'mum and dad' but keep them in the cage where they will be next to each other )I'll put the 'divider' in to make 2 separate compartments. But I'll need to wait until this wee one leaves the nest.Emmyps I've started your painting today. :)

  7. :):):) It wont have been the first time I've tasted animal/bird food. ( Purely by accident of course :) )I was having a coffee and I had my biscuit in my hand then my chihuahua wanted his 'smacko'dog chew Yes! you guessed I got them mixed up and bit into the 'smacko' and the dog enjoyed my biscuit!!Smackos definately not good with coffee!! :) now I'm a bit more careful-'once bitten twice shy!!' so I'll just take your word for it and I guess I'll not bother tasting the hand rearing food :):) Emmy

  8. Hi AllanUnfortunately I dont have any other birds I could foster it out to. It would have to be ME! I'm keeping a close check on it and so far they are still feeding the chick. Thankfully I do have the hand rearing food on hand if I need to use it.Thanks for your suggestion AllanEmmy

  9. Never had this happening before. The one chick that has survived out of 7 eggs laid is still in the nest(only 9 days old) and its'mother' has started laying again? This morning I was surprised to find an egg next to the chick in the nest. Should I remove that egg? or should I remove the chick? or just leave everything alone to see what happens?Emmy

  10. You may have a champion on your hands Mark. Your chick may have decided it was going to start training early in the hope of getting a gold medal for diving at the Olympics.Just think Mark you would be famous ;) The owner of the first zebra finch that could swim and live to tell the tale:lol: :lol:Emmy ;););)

  11. Mark I know you said it wasnt funny but I would have loved to have been a 'fly on the wall' to see that. pity you hadnt had a video on the go and you would have been able to get £250 from 'You've Been Framed'Joking apart I'm glad the wee thing is ok but I bet you didnt half get a fright! One more thing I must say ;) , 'and you wonder why your poor wife wont put the rings on the birds when you are in hospital!?!!Emmy ;););)

  12. Hi GarySo far so goodThe 'parents' are sitting on the nest now and it seems they are feeding it, but when they come off I have a peek and its definately breathing  although I havent been able to see if there is enough food in its 'crop'? but I dont want to lift it out of the nest in case it disturbs the 'parents' again. Not sure if it would be wise to try to give it some 'hand rearing food' as well or just leave mum and dad to it.Thanks for asking.Emmy

  13. I know I said in reply to a post that perhaps sometimes it may be better to let nature take its course but I dont think I could leave it in the nest to die if I thought I could do something for it. Just like today if I hadnt taken it out of the nest 3 times and warmed it up and gave it something to eat it would have been dead by now. and right now its back in the nest being fed with its 'mum and dad'. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that they look after it during the night.Emmy

  14. Hi Helen Thanks for that I was beginning to think I would have to attach it to ME  . At least one good thing my central heating is working now so the house is nice and warm. I had thought about going to buy one of those hand warmers that you could heat in the microwave . I wasnt too sure about leaving it in the cage but it seems that worked for you. So far though tonight they have gone back to feeding it but i'll need to keep an eye on it no idea what caused the problem today.Emmy

  15. Hi PaulI dont think this one will need to chirp to be fed ;) I dont know what I was worrying about the rate this chick is growing I think it will be the size of a pigeon before it leaves the nest. (and I was just aksing recently what you do to get bigger birds :lol:)Joking apart the amount of food that they are cramming into this chick!! -its neck looks as though its going to burst. its body too is truly much bigger than the last chicks that hatched out in December and it looks to be much darker too. So I may be in for a nice surprise but so long as it survives that's really all I'm wanting.Emmy

  16. I have another problem tonight, the wee chick (4/5days old and the only one in the nest)is almost bursting with the amount of food in its throat so its definately getting fed but the 'parents' dont seem to be sitting on the nest both of them are sitting on a perch - could it be anything to do with the room temperature. (Maybe too warm?) Just what do you do to keep a young chick like this warm if the parents neglect it? ( Beginning to think its easier to look after a few new born human babies :( )Emmy

  17. I always have some hand rearing food just in case, i would rather have to throw it not used than need it and not have it.
Hi Helen that's what I'm thinking right now. No use waiting until you need it because when ordering on line you dont usually get it the next day.Emmy
