  1. Hi Mark

I have few pairs on there second round now which will be there last for a while i will rest them up for six months,
When you do this do you separate the male & famale or do you just remove the nest box? I didnt separate them but I removed the nest box but the hen started laying eggs again- this time on the floor of the cage. If this happens do you just remove the eggs? (I find that hard to do - that's why I've now got another full nest with 7 eggs which should hatch out around the beg. of next month.Emmy

  2. Today at the place where I buy all my seed and millet spray etc I bought two 'pink blocks' to put one in each fo my zebra finches cages. I've a recollection that they were 'iodine' blocks but not at all sure There is no infromation on the packet. I did have one of those in my 'Budgie's cage a long time ago. Is it safe to give this to Finches? the block is hard.Emmy

  3. They wont sell a single guinea pig at the place I go to either and the reason for this that guinea pigs really need to be with at least one other guinea pig. They're not 'happy' to be on their own they live in groups. I know this is true because I kept guinea pigs for many years and I would never give anyone just one guinea pig to keep as a pet they had to take at least two.(I gave mine away free as long as I was sure they were going to be looked after properly.)Dont know if this is the reason the stores say they must take two it could be a way of getting more money but I hope that wouldnt be the reason. These were mine, sadly they have all died now from old age.guinea_pigs.jpgEmmy

  4. i notice in picture has it just had a big Wee on your carpet??? whoops sorry for pointing that out,
Mark Really had a good laugh at that! ;) It's not had a 'wee' its actually his shadow but it really looks like he had been desparate to get out. Guess my photography skills leave a lot to be desired.Emmy :lol::lol:

  5. Looks a good idea Mark. I've been using moss collected from my garden which I wash and dry before putting it in the cage I also separate a 2 ply paper handkie into the two 1 ply sheets and then tear it into pieces about 3 to 4" long. I was given a present which was a ceramic ball with holes in it that could be hung up and it was filled with nesting material but it looked like a form of cotton wool so I didnt use it guess it may have been meant for the wild birds. Was wondering about this:- when I brush my dog I get lots of soft hair but not sure if this would be ok for finches (the wild birds use it in the Spring)Emmy

  6. Thanks for the link PhilippeThey would be great hopefully it would cut down on the husks being all over the Place. But it seems as though they dont post to Britain - getting my daughter in France to check it out for me. Emmy

  7. Thanks TrevorSounds easy when you know how!I wished I had posted a question about 'catching' them before I did that. The reason I moved them was the 'mum' had laid two eggs and I decided to let them go ahead and rear another set of babies but since yesterday she hasnt laid another egg just wondering if all the commotion they were having in the cage yesterday could stop her laying?

  9. Wow you caught 40 It took me all morning just to catch 4 and they were in a cage!!How do you catch them?- I must be doing something wrong or as I said in another post today

'I think the 4 young have been having lessons from the 'red arrows' :)

  10. My 4 young birds are still in the cage with 'mum and dad' they still have their black beaks and are not yet fully mature but they do feed themselves now. I have taken the nest basket out from the cage but 'mum' over the past two days has laid two more eggs on the bottom of the cage ( I have removed the eggs from the cage because I felt it was too soon for them to raise another lot of chicks.) But now I'm feeling really guilty about doing this. I do have another cage that I could put the 4 young chicks in. Would it harm the adult birds to let them raise another clutch of eggs so soon. If I put the nest basket back in the cage can I put those two eggs that I removed back in the nest? Would they still hatch out?Emmy
