  1. Hi Helen ad MarkYes I've been thinking about trying painting zebra Finches. At the moment I cant relax enough to paint- just in the middle of getting all the repairs done after all the damage done with the high winds we had here in Scotland. Then within the next 2/3 weeks I'm having new central heating installed but once that is finsihed I will definaltely need to relax and I'll paint a zebra finch for the forum - If you (Helen and Mark) have a good clear photograph of one you would like painted please post it - you may have to be patient but I'll do it. (but please dont forget I'm just an amateur)EmmyThese are a different type of bird :D Once again my daughter in France took the photograph of her hens and I decided to do a painting of them and gave it a name  'Chick Chat: We'll cosy up together' :D:D (The name I use to sign my paintings is Nonnagina) ;)Chick_Chat_We_ll_cosy_up_together_by_Non.jpg

  2. Thanks Helen its justs another one of my hobbies. It was a change painting a bird usually its bigger pets I paint (eg dogs cats rabbits etc)The following are photographs taken at my daughter's home in France. This wild bird stunned itself and I managed to get it to take some water from my finger , then onto my finger and finally it flew off from my finger onto the roof of a building. Just was sooo wonderful to be able to study a 'wild' bird so close up. I'm going to be doing a painting from those photographs soon.mum_again_006.jpgmum_again_014.jpgEmmy

  3. I joined this zebra finch forum after searching the internet to find a forum that would give me the answers to the many (perhaps some may think silly) questions I have re zebra finches. I havent been disappointed everyone is so willing to help. After having been on this forum and reading about the ZFS I have been thinking about joining the ZFS but as I dont 'show' the finches that I have I'm not sure if I could join? But whether I join or not I will still post here. You are all so good and have a wealth of information that you dont hesitate to share - better than can be found in books.Emmy

  4. Many thanks Trevor I did use the link - the photographs are outstanding.Showing my ignorance here, what are 'abb's'? There was nothning printed at the top of each photograph only thing I noticed was that they have been marked copyright. The reason I thought it would be good to show an example of the bird next to the 'intials' is for people like me (:) past their sell by date ;) )would become aware of what others were 'talking' about on the forum.I enjoyed looking at the photographs made me feel like getting my watercolour paints out - but cant do that re the copyright. Just love painting wildlife. This is one of my own photographs that I painted of my grandson feeding a chick.Adoption_Grandson_feeding_orphan.jpgEmmy

  5. Re the first post about 'which do you keep?' Is there anywhere, illustrations linking these names to the colour of the birds is available. Sorry to be such an 'uneducated person' :) but the only colours I know are the normal zebra finches and the cfw and the fawn and that's only because I have had the normal coloured zebra finches and from a photograph I posted of the ones I have now I was told I have a fawn hen and a chestnut flanked white male.Emmy

  6. Gary that video is just amazing I tried to video my newly hatched chicks to send to my grand-daughter in France but it didnt work -very blurred- maybe it was where the nest was in the cage and I couldnt get a proper focus - your video is just perfect. Thanks for sharing it. Emmy

  7. Hi PeteI'm no expert but I can tell you my pair of Zebra Finches have just hatch out 4 eggs in December and the young have not long left the nest. I wondered too about this, but mine are kept inside the house so I guess the outside temperature wouldnt matter.Emmy

  8. Thanks Trevor for that information. Its very interesting to learn about the names for the different colours - guess I'll never feel I'm too old to learn something new :) I have never entered any of the Finches I've had into any shows. I must be honest here and own up and say I keep them as 'pets'. In the past when I had to give some away I had to make very sure they would be going to good homes so it came to pass that only friends and family were allowed to give them homes, and those finches too lived until they were 11/12 years old. The smallest one (the one with the white beak) has become very tame and perches on my finger. (they've all got names now so I guess they will be staying with me for good)Thanks again Trevor its much appreciated.Emmy

  9. Thanks for the replies its appreciated.I took a close up photograph of the one with the white beak (hatched :pink body) if it is a pied white do you think its beak will eventually become orange/red? I noticed its head seems to be getting darker. The other photograph is the mum and dad and the other photo is of two 'white' ones just after they left the nest yesterday.Dec_28th_White_beak_pink_body_when_hatched.jpgDecember_25th_2011.jpg27th_Dec_2011.jpg

  10. I agree Helen but the small one (the one that hatched out pink bodied with a white beak) still isnt up on a perch but it keeps coming out of the nest and sitting on the bottom of the cage. I put in another nest basket near the bottom of the cage and I think I'll put it back into the nest tonight just in case it gets cold. 'Mum' is still feeding it in the new nest basket. Nature is wonderful isnt it! (good excuse for neglecting the housework) Emmy

  11. Many Thanks for your replies guess it's going to be a case of a waiting game just to find out how this little mystery turns out - but no matter what - be it a 'he' or 'she' or beautiful or ugly as sin it will be loved just the same. This brood was the best Christmas present I could have wished for. Thanks again for answeringEmmy

  12. I'm new to the forum. I have had Zebra Finches for many years, my last one died 4 months ago age 12years 6 months old I knew the exact age because I had the mother and father. I bought a new pair two months ago and they have laid eggs and 4 have hatched out but the odd thing is the first one that hatched out on the 11th December was bright pink and has stayed that colour the others when they hatched out were all the normal colour for newly hatched chicks (dark with black beaks) now they have feathers and two will be almost white the other is dark but the 'pink' one is still pink and is the smallest of the four. Its feathers are starting to come in (white I think)but its beak is white too and its eyes seem to be pink where the others their eyes are black and their beaks are black. I have never come across this before and I'm just wondering if it will be OK or if there is some special food suppliment I should be giving it. The parents are still feeding it. Someone said to me they thought it may be an 'albino'?Be grateful for any ideasEmmy
