  1. I'm just sorting out the last of the birds to go then I'll be starting to pair up with a view to getting breeding in about 3 weeks time .it's hard deciding on which birds to let go as they are all decent at this stage of the cut.

  2. First round going ok for me , I only put 4 pairs down as I had a late finish with a few pairs last year. Got 9 fledglings and a few still to hatch so could be worse fingers crossed some of the younger pairs get the hang of it a bit more for round 2 it's been a bit hit and miss for last years birds especially the cocks they are a bit keen and don't sit too well. Good luck everyone.

  3. Hi birdman she's only just started sitting today after the third blue egg layed but I have noticed the first egg is the darkest blue the second lighter again and the third is lighter again all are still very blue but the first egg was ridiculously blue so I suppose I'll know in a few days whether they are fertile or not but I'll keep you posted. Who knows what will happen all part of the learning curve I suppose.

    Regards Chris.

  4. One of my hens has started laying very blue eggs not just a tint of blue like normal but really blue , I thought it might have been a one off as she has layed the odd blueish one in the past but these are really blue. Has anyone else experience of this or is there something amiss here ,regards Chris .

  5. Decided last week I would remove the nestboxes from the flight and cages this week and the little so and so's have decided to have an egg laying festival in the last few days , 11 bengalese eggs candled today about half look fertile,6 silverbill eggs 4 look fertile and 10 zebra finch eggs 8 look fertile and to top it off I've got 5 lovely sized zebra finch chicks due to fledge in the next few days so it's looks like I'm going to have a busy end to my season good job the flight and shed are lit up and heated or I'd be right up the creek as it's getting a bit on the nippy side out there I'm not complaining but I've had hardly any birds going down in the last month and all of a sudden when the boxes are due to come out boooom breeding fest ,I'm sure they are winding me up.

  6. Cheers for the advice all , she's still sitting tight on 2 eggs at the moment but if no luck with these 2 she's getting a well deserved rest and next season mr and mrs bengalese I think

  7. My best pair have been smashing eggs , they keep getting stuck to their feathers and hence they are dragging them out of the nestbox and smashing them . I have stopped putting their bath water in to help stop this but it's still happening it could be down to humidity as it's a bit muggy outside but the shed is not that humid ,the last clutch of 4 eggs all got smashed this way and this clutch of 5 are now reduced to 2 as both the cock and hen have had an egg or 2 stuck to there rumps in the last few days . Even more frustrating as this is their last chance this year before I take the boxes out for the winter rest period any tips on preventing this welcome cheers.
