  1. I can`t believe how quickly they grow Emmy.

They go through so many transitions in such a short space of time.

The next step I guess will be moulting and growing their adult feathers?

Then the next milestone will be colouring up.

At the moment they remind me of tiny silver ducklings/cygnets. Definitely cute

  2. I had two of them out today. Eldest one managed to get onto the perches so not doing so bad.

I have put them both back in the nest with the remaining chick, and they have settled down for the night.

Parents are sleeping on a shelf at the top of their cage. Think they must enjoy it up there as the `kids` can`t get to them.

  3. You have to admire their reasoning and intelligence. Hard to believe they go from egg, to blob, to thinking being, in such a short period of time.

First time I have had chicks of any kind, so to see them change so quickly has been amazing. When you look in the nest opening and see the chicks duck out of sight you know they are aware of themselves and the outside world. Still surprised at how well a newly fledged chick can run. The parents were mugged for food a few times yesterday.

  4. Thanks for the advice everyone. New to this so all help gratefully received.

The chick had a fun day out Sarah. Chased the parents all over the cage for food. Ran forwards, and backwards, head butted both parents for food. Entertaining to watch. I am expecting it to jump out again tomorrow, probably with one or both of its siblings

  5. Popped the cheeky little thing back in its nest. It was determined not to go in and kept spreading its wings so I couldn`t get it in the hole, but it finally gave up and joined its siblings. Parents just carried on pecking at their seed so not bothered in the slightest.

  6. It is running around after its parents. I`ll pop it back in the nest before dusk so it spends the night cuddled up with its siblings. It has tried to get on the perches but is unable to do so yet. Thanks Dean.

  7. For a couple of days now my Zebra Finch pair have spent the nights sleeping away from the chicks, but feeding well and calling for the chicks to leave the nest. Chicks have been leaning out the nest a good way, but losing their nerve and going back in the box. This afternoon I went in the shed and found one had fledged. Eldest chick is 2 weeks and 3 days old. Parents are feeding it, and still encouraging other 2 chicks to fly. I wasn`t expecting them to fledge until they were 3 weeks old.

  8. Andy

I didn`t realise how curious they were as not kept birds since I was a teenager ( a bad tempered budgie that couldn`t fly).

I attached a cuttlefish to the cage and had a struggle with the holder. Ended up with a broken holder and bits of cuttlefish everywhere. Soon as I withdrew from the cage the zebs were down pecking at the cuttlefish and flying off with bits. Needless to say they both wanted the same piece!

I do like the pieds. Like the Blackcheeks too, but the whites are just so eye catching.

I`m trying not too get too carried away straight off, so figure 3 pairs will be adequate for the time being.

Mind you there was a sweet normal zeb cock at the pet shop singing his little heart out. Thankfully there was only one hen ( the CFW ) so I was able to resist him.

  9. Well. I have to admit that after only a few days of owning Zebs I am smitten. Such cheerful inquisitive birds.

The constant talking they do is enchanting, and so easy on the ears.

My Zebs are in my shed and every time they hear a wild bird they break into chatter. Absolutely adorable.

Ordered a large Delfi 102 cage for them, and plan on getting another 2 pairs of whites or CFW`s.

  10. A month or so back there were a few `white` zebs in my local pet shop, and I was tempted then, but resisted. I`ve kicked myself ever since, as after looking at all the other colour varieties, that`s the colour that excites me. Although I also like fawns, black cheeks, and crested. Called the pet shop today and was told they had one `white` bird in so off I went.

The other cocks were all normal Zebras. This one has a much lighter cheek colour, which is what caught my eye.

Have to say I love the peep they make. So cute. My dog is enamoured too. She must think they are squeaky toys!!

Almost got tempted by some Bengalese finches at pet store too. Could be a dangerous hobby this.

  11. Thanks for the warning Emy. I have an addictive nature so need to be careful!

There were some lovely white zebs in my local petstore some months back, and I almost bought some, but resisted the urge.

Been kicking myself ever since as loved the look of them, and really like the noise Zebs make
