  1. I was having more cocks than hens hatch last season so I read up on it a bit. Apparently UV levels have an effect on this. All the natural light in my shed comes through glass filters a lot of the UV. I added a couple of UV lights which are on throughout the day and balance was restored. It may have just been a coincidence but it's worth a shot.

  2. Breeding pairs often don't mix well with others. They can be very territorial. She may also be using the feathers as nesting material. I would suggest keeping a breeding pair together (whether you actually let them breed is another matter) and a pair of females in a separate cage.

Other people may have other ideas but this seems like a good solution to me.

  3. Hi Stuart,

I'm not in North Kent,  I'm about 15 miles south of maidstone. I had a few birds from Keith a while back. He's a really nice guy and what a great setup. It's Keith that has made me want to show my birds, his enthusiasm is very infectious.. Hopefully I'll be able to get a couple of decent pairs together.

I look forward to seeing you at the shows.

  4. Not really. Dominant silvers vary a huge amount in how much the colour is diluted but I'm fairly sure all markings are diluted equally. Recessive silvers only have diluted body colour, breast bars, tears and tail markings. There aren't many recessive silvers about and they can be hard to spot.

  5. Recessive silver dilutes the black markings and body colour (eumelanin pigment) and not the cheeks and flanks (phaeomelanin pigment).

    Dominant silver dilutes all pigments.

Dominant silver to dominant silver isn't recommended, as apparently the double factor dominant silver is lethal.

    Recessive silvers can be paired.

  6. Thanks Andy. I'm quite pleased with it. It's certainly grown from the four pairs I originally had. I won't be building any more extensions though. I'll be selling fifty or so birds soon. It's very difficult deciding which ones.

I did have to pay for the tree to be cut down but there are enough logs to keep me going for a year or so.

  7. Yup, definitely the last extension. :D. I'm hoping to be finished in a few weeks. I'll let you know if you fancy coming up to have a look. The extension will only be a couple of flights for cocks and hens. The birds are getting a bit more room and I'm re-claiming the current hens flight for a wood store.
