Hi Clare,
Sorry for the late response, I've been away. Yes, you can come up with me - I'm showing some birds though so it'll be a long day.

Claire - I've got some nice silver cock birds split for bc if you want one.
1 hour ago, Clare L said:Oh and if I see any 6'5" strangers hanging around I know who it will be I have CCTV
Oh, did I say 6'5"? I meant 4'2".

No red and white shirt but I did bottle out of a bidding war on that pair of normals. Still regretting that one!
-
Clare - I'll just have to breed my own then!
Stuart - I spent a fair bit of time over by the sales cages, I'm 6 foot 5, so I generally stand out a bit but I'll catch up with you in September if you're going.

Hmm, I read it and replied. Must be gremlins in the system. Or possibly operator error. I went up to the show, so I might have met you anyway.

Very nice. This one of my favourite combinations. The pale cheeks set the black face off really well. If he's looking for somewhere to stay for a while I don't mind looking after him.

Breeding pairs often don't mix well with others. They can be very territorial. She may also be using the feathers as nesting material. I would suggest keeping a breeding pair together (whether you actually let them breed is another matter) and a pair of females in a separate cage.
Other people may have other ideas but this seems like a good solution to me.

It only takes one to get the idea and the rest will follow. I've had birds that won't touch egg food until they've been in with birds that will eat it. Good luck.

Hi Stuart,
I'm not in North Kent, I'm about 15 miles south of maidstone. I had a few birds from Keith a while back. He's a really nice guy and what a great setup. It's Keith that has made me want to show my birds, his enthusiasm is very infectious.. Hopefully I'll be able to get a couple of decent pairs together.
I look forward to seeing you at the shows.

Hi Stuart and welcome to the forum.
I'm in kent too, have you joined the kent zebra finch club? It's well worth it, nice bunch of people and two shows in north kent each year.

I would say that dad is isabel split for bb. Mum is definitely isabel, looks like some orange too and probably bb.

Not really. Dominant silvers vary a huge amount in how much the colour is diluted but I'm fairly sure all markings are diluted equally. Recessive silvers only have diluted body colour, breast bars, tears and tail markings. There aren't many recessive silvers about and they can be hard to spot.
-
Recessive silver dilutes the black markings and body colour (eumelanin pigment) and not the cheeks and flanks (phaeomelanin pigment).
Dominant silver dilutes all pigments.
Dominant silver to dominant silver isn't recommended, as apparently the double factor dominant silver is lethal.
Recessive silvers can be paired.

Hello and welcome back to zebra finches. I came back to them after about 15/16 years away and I'm glad I did.
Enjoy the forum.

Thanks Andy. I'm quite pleased with it. It's certainly grown from the four pairs I originally had. I won't be building any more extensions though. I'll be selling fifty or so birds soon. It's very difficult deciding which ones.
I did have to pay for the tree to be cut down but there are enough logs to keep me going for a year or so.

Yes £240,000! That's the joy of living out in the sticks.
-
I got a quote to have gas put to the house but £240,000 seemed a bit much! Plus chopping wood makes me look like a macho man.
-
My wife would kill me if we didn't have enough wood. Its our only heat source and we have a part chopped oak tree messing up the garden at the moment. The birds will have more space to fly and the house will be nice and warm too. Win win!

Yup, definitely the last extension. . I'm hoping to be finished in a few weeks. I'll let you know if you fancy coming up to have a look. The extension will only be a couple of flights for cocks and hens. The birds are getting a bit more room and I'm re-claiming the current hens flight for a wood store.
-
This will be my last extension, (probably). I'll post some pictures when I'm done.
Very few female chicks hatching?

I was having more cocks than hens hatch last season so I read up on it a bit. Apparently UV levels have an effect on this. All the natural light in my shed comes through glass filters a lot of the UV. I added a couple of UV lights which are on throughout the day and balance was restored. It may have just been a coincidence but it's worth a shot.
