  2. @Rolf

Very true Rolf, Andy is very wise on this point, but to say that Zebra finches from one whole Country are not useful in the improving of Zebra finches from another is, Firstly Untrue and Secondly A little insulting.

An Example of this is the Grey Cheek and Fawn cheek Mutations, a relative new comer to the UK in terms of the exhibition scene. The first Birds in these mutation were from the continent and not  to the uk standard, But with a bit of time, for sight and stock Management, They have "Evolved" into the birds which we have today winning many top awards in UK.

My aim is to breed Better birds, if i feel a certain aspect is missing in my birds, i will look to gain this aspect no matter which country the birds carrying this aspect are from, as i understand they are in essence the same birds taken in a different direction by their owner/Breeder which i would then use to improve my stud through Stock management.

    evolution (ˌiːvəˈluːʃən)

    n
    1. (Biology) biology a gradual change in the characteristics of a population of animals or plants over successive generations: accounts for the origin of existing species from ancestors unlike them.

What your on about is Evolution through Natural Selection, in essence Survival of the fittest which is not the only source of Evolution, see any Domestic Animal such as the Dog it has evolved from Wolves.

    Evolution

:  a process of change in a certain direction.

Also i don't find Uk birds Expensive i have Bought some top quality birds and was very happy with the price, after all it is supply and demand.

  4. Hi Rolf

A zebra finch is a Zebra finch you speak of Uk and Continental Birds as if they are separate species, as a breeder you take from a bird the useful aspects you need, if you can't see the useful part of a uk bird then your not looking hard enough.  Its funny how many other Continental Breeders have Uk birds and do very well from them.

  5. Hi Rolf

Glad to see you have changed your opinion on UK Zebra finches, i seem to remember you said you would rather stop with Zebra if they became to much like UK birds

    "I prefer the continental type,too.

If you want to change the volume, you also change the type of the bird.
And you will see at once if there is english blood in your birds.
The same problems we had by the gloster canaries."

  7. Hi Andy

You can get crop problems in birds, these can be caused by objects in the crop that can't be digested like wood chips or diseases such as Canker. You will at times get chicks with excess air in they crop, but it is only when this is excessive and the neck is blown up like a balloon that i would start to panic and if needed gently burping the chick, this should only be done in extreme cases and with as much care as possible.

  8. Hi Mike

They look to be picking each other they may not be getting on, are you sure the hen is a hen it can be hard to tell sometime with recessive whites, even if the hen is a white they can still not get on sometimes for reason like the cock may want to breed and the hen doesn't.

  9. Hi

If its quality your after you breed him to the best hen you can depending on her mutation, if you breed him to a normal hen his young will all carry the BC gene and need to be paired to another split BC birds or a visual BC to produce more BC's.

  10. Hi Emmy

If you want to increase the quality of your Blackcheeks, you need to either buy high quality BC's or use high quality main stream colours to increase the quality through the breeding of splits.

    Paul.

  11. Hi

A Cfw cock Or a Split Cfw cock can not produce Visual male CFW offspring with out being paired to a hen with CFW .

Are the birds in a cage on their own ?

sometimes you do get hens who get a degree of cheek marking sometimes it just down to their genes other times its because of a mutation coming out i think OB can cause it if i remember rightly.

  12. Hi

I have found how moist my egg food is can make a real difference with my birds to wet or dry and they don't eat it very well, what i do is use room temp water adding a small amount at a time and mixing it while the water is added,I like the consistency of my egg food to be where if I take a small handful and squeeze it will bind into a ball or lump but then easily crumble back again.

Also adding Grated Carrot now and again is very good as it is a good source of Vitamin A which is important.
