Hi Wayne Welcome back to the wonderful world of Zebra finches.Best wishes to everyone and a happy new year.

Sorry to hear about you losing you much loved pet,the thing is with small birds such as zebra finches is they are very good at hiding illness and these little birds can get many things wrong with them, from infections and diseases to heart defects and liver failer.I once knew i gentleman who lost a great many of his birds because he changed the cleaner he used on his drinkers and seed pots and unknowingly use one not animal safe,i also have heard things like letting a none stick pan get to hot lets off flumes which can kill birds.Paul.

I only really use the heat to keep it above freezing and keep the drinking water from freezing. If the temperature drops like now you could lose the odd bird which has been unfit or is old,but do you really want to be breeding off any birds like these anyway. The other thing which my father alway's points out to me is,if you show birds and your shed is nicely heat when you take your birds to a freezing cold show hall their not going to like it.Paul.

I've Had the odd bird which wont eat Egg food and the only things which have sometimes got them eating it are.1)Put them with another bird which eats egg food and sometimes they will copy it.2)Feed large pieces of boiled egg for a while and if they start eating this add a boiled egg the your Egg food mix.Paul.

I Have Tube heaters on a thermostat which keeps the temp at above 5c,the cold doesn't seem to affect the birds to much.Paul.

Hi Gillian The seed mix that i use has Red Millet,Panicum millet and white millet in the mix with some other seeds,i can say that my birds do eat the Red millet but they dont seem as keen on Red millet as the other types in the mixed.I can see this when im topping up the seed pots and removing any husk's the left over seed aways has i higher level of red millet left in it.Hope this is helpful.Paul.

Hi Nick I agree with you i have found that birds in flights fight like **** and pluck feathers constantly, but flights are an easy way to keep a large stud.As for breeding in october,i think the best time to get the good breeding results is when the birds are in the best condition to breed no matter what time of year,we try our best to build them up too fit our plans but sometime they have other ideas in mind much to our frustration, but your right in what you say i have noticed my bird seem to be more inclined to breed in the wet weather, infact i have some pairs which would not breed in feb-march on chicks now,i think its better to breed pairs late than not at all. Best wishes Paul

I use any type of small wood chips i can get my hands on when its breeding time like lilico or anthing else comparable too Lilico. One day im going to try that flax straw that also looks promising as a bedding but not during breeding season as i think they would put it in the nest, with some pairs building over egg/chicks.Paul.
