  1. If you are enjoying the hobby and are confident you are are it it for the long haul i would say get the biggest you can afford

no matter what size set up you have you never seem to have enough space and having a bit of space makes things much more enjoyable not being cramped when working in the shed mine is 12x8 and wish i got 16x8 now

have a look on the gallery to get some ideas some cracking set ups about

you say you  only want a few but believe me you will want a few more when you get some

    whatever you decide good luck

  2. i think the thing to remember is that the ability or want of a bird to rear youngsters is imo as much a feature of a bird as its physical features

you wouldnt expect two birds with big beaks to breed chicks with small beaks for example

so from two poor feeders i wouldnt expect any fostered chicks to particularly good feeders

so this should be taken into account when deciding which birds to retain the following year with birds of similar quality the ones from good feeding parents should give you the best chance being good feeders themselves and i would keep these

of course i wouldnt expect anyone to discard quality birds from a poor feeding line

  3. Well that's me paired up 17 pairs a couple more than was going too but just couldn't decide which birds to cut from the breeding program

still have some useful birds in reserve but you just cant use them all

the last 10 days or so they have pulling each other to bits in stock cages so i reckon they are ready fingers crossed

hoping for similar quality to last year but with a few more normals

Good luck to you all this year hope your breeding seasons are stress free although they seldom are

  4. certainly not against suppliments i have used wheatgerm oil as a suppliment for getting birds ready for breeding for many years and have always given vitamins all year round the grit i give because the birds like picking over it and i crush the cuttle and when i put a pinch on cage floor birds go straight to it.

if you get full rounds whatever you do dont change

  5. Have had plenty of starts like this mate, just got to be patient and wait for things to click and not start interfering with things too much

one thing i would say is try knocking the liquid calcium on the head

best year i ever had 2 years ago birds got none, last year fed it again and had a start like you having now stopped it upon taking some advice off a very knowledgeable chap six weeks later i had about 50 chicks in nest!!!

his theory is it reduces cocks fertility whilst they are on it, my results at the time and the previous year backed this up

try it mate mine will never be getting it again cuttlefish and grit only,

good luck mate sure they will come good

  6. Cage and Aviary about a year ago reported on some budgie deaths at a show

upon investigation it appears to have been non stick pans that were the culprit being used in the kitchen adjoining the show hall to do bacon butties for exhibitors

just goes to show how sensitive birds are to gases toxins ect
