i hatched japanese quail eggs last year :) i loved them....but awfully messy!

had to sell them all at around Christmas though, they kept killing my dads finches and made so much mess!....but were also very tame :D

what kind of incubator are you using for them? :)

Not sure what type this is but it's a manual one (turn the eggs yourself)

  2. I don't mind the eggs, in fact I think it's great and it tells me things are good in the aviary.

Mum not purposely breeding I just put nest boxes up and waited to see what happens.

Well so far I have 4 week old zebra chicks, another 2 nest boxes with eggs and now 3 canary eggs

  3. I have 1 cock diamond dove, his partner died a few weeks ago, and he has teamed up with my pair of Java Sparrows and all get along very well ( i think he thinks he's a Java ) but recently he has been cooing quite a lot and I don't like to see my birds without a partner, I always buy as pairs.

Do I get a single hen bird or maybe 2 hens, would this encourage breeding or cause problems?

also thinking of another pair of Java Sparrows, I had a single pair of canaries and they wasn't interested in each other, but when I got a 2nd pair the singing increased and now nest building is on the go, so will the same happen with the javas ?

  4. Built the aviary in February, birds end of February and now this morning chicks!!

Wasn't looking to breed and it's not a plan of mine, I just put nest boxes in to keep them happy and if they did then great.

Had a fare bit of activity over the last month and this is the result.

So far I believe 1 chick, but hard to see so will just have to wait to see what happens and hope mum and dad can bring them on

  5. Thanks for the replys, of course it may not be the cold but it was a sudden cold snap, the heating was also on as its on every night, but I'm not convinced it puts out enough heat

  6. I think I lost a bird to the cold on Monday night (diamond dove), Tuesday after work when I checked on the birds the dove was sat in the quail house to which I thought looked like sitting on eggs, so I never went in to see.

Tonight I checked on them again and the dove was still there so I went in to look and she was dead, sat up which makes me think cold.

All other birds are fine and they all get shut inside at night into a heated bird house.

Its one of those tube heaters but i don't think it puts out enough heat.

What would you guys recommend to use?

    Red lamp maybe?

  7. Currently have zebra finches, pair of diamond doves, pair of canaries and a pair of Java sparrows, all getting along nicely with no problems.

Could I keep a pair of budgies with them? I have always stuck to the rule of " pointy beaks with pointy beaks and hooked beaks with hooked beaks" if that is the case and I should not mix them then so be it, but I do find them fascinating little things .

My dad had them mixed with alsorts problem free, the only problems he had was with love birds, but his aviary was massive so plenty of room.

    Any advice would be great

  8. Got about 10 next boxes and 5 next pans, nearly all have eggs in some have 5 eggs some 2 and some 1.

I believe they need to lay quite a few before they sit in them and incubate them.

Some of these eggs have been there for about 3 weeks, do you think these will be ok and I just need to wait?

  9. Started using the Avigold advance, but I'm not sure if the birds like it.

The bottle says "5 pumps of tonic to 1 litre of water", so I filled a litre bottle of water up and added the 5 pumps, the water goes a greenish colours and smells, it just seems far to much and I think the smell is putting the birds off.

I can only think I've misunderstood the dosage.

    Anyone else using this?

  10. Yes it was, they came from a pet shop in Bristol, got a very good name and a great selection of birds and everything else you could need, will certainly keep using him.

Not 100% sure the finches eggs are any good but will wait and see, I put some canary nest pans up for the doves so will see what happens
