  2. Hi all, I am in bits, I have just taken my little "China" body out of his indoor aviary and I feel that I killed him, his Mrs, Lovely, now looks a sad picture of herself sitting on a swing branch on her own. Only a few hours ago she was sitting right beside him with her head over his shaking body which looked very large  and puffed up and doing her best to comfort him, I am heart broken and blame myself. You see, these two have been an item since I bought them five or six years ago, as I built a large aviary in my hallway I added first "Whitey", a hen, then, to keep her company I bought Star, a red headed star finch, they too are inseparable best friends, these four , now three are my pets, spoilt like mad and named by my little granddaughters. A few days ago I gave them some crumbled up cake from my grandsons third birthday, after a couple of days I noticed a lot had been taken, nice yellow cake crumbs, no icing or jam etc. This morning China was not himself at all, he seemed extremely large , uncomfortable, breathing quite heavily and was lying on the floor of his home and didn't want to move, I knew he was not well of course and kept watch for a couple of hours to monitor everything. During this time he was picked on by Whitey as if Whitey was taking advantage of his illness, China was the boss previously but him and lovely are a lot older than the other two, I immediately separated the two pairs, Star and Whitey into a massive cage I keep complete with swinging branches swings etc, all the best of course for my pets ( you think my terrier is spoilt ! ) and this left me wondering if Whitey had injured him in some way in the last few days or nights, surely not, could she ? would she ? this really hurt me and I was scared stiff for my little China. I finally got to see my vet early evening, he just wasn't sure but I left there with syringes and a bottle of something as he thought he must have an infection, this I put into his only water bottle for the night to make sure he would drink it and as I put him into the aviary in his carrier he slinked straight off and faced the far corner and looked to me like he had gone there to die, poor lovely just watched from her perch and did not go to see him, I was not very confident, my wife told me I should not have put the cake in their home as it was one week old, but surely one of the other three would have taken some wouldn't they ? I was so confused with my sadness not helping. well, to cut it short, at eleven o clock I took a peek and my beloved China was no more, I am now telling myself I killed him with the cake and cannot stop the tears from streaming down my face, everything was normal beforehand, routine, all clean, fresh cucumber twice a week, how he loved that, only the cake broke my usual routine, did I kill my China ? is Whitey guilty of something ? she was always a spunky little thing, that's why I chose her, oh well, I feel a bit better now after writing, sorry if I've  sent anybody off to an early sleep, it's helped me some, God bless, martintheveg.

  3. Cant say i know anything about canaries but i bought a hen and a cock on good friday, i put them in seperate cages, the hen with my zebs in the large indoor aviary

and the cock alone, the cock was singing and whistling and after about a week i put them together in the cage, i put nesting stuff in and they started to make a nest together in the bird bath, with water in it ! so i took water out and blow me before long, towards the last week in april hen laid four eggs, now, for the last three days i have four chicks and have been making eggfood up for them both every four hours or so as its so hot, its great to watch the cock feed the hen and the hen to feed the chicks, i have purchased just about everything a canary could want to eat including some bees honey feed from oz, i didnt really expect this as i thought it was going to be a lot more complicated , but i am now in the middle of building a second indoor aviary to go opposite the zebs one i have recently built, there is a pic on here of it, just stick with it and sorry you have lost a bird, i`ve been lucky thus far, touch wood but have lost plenty of dogs, buried in my garden as i used to foster golden oldies who nobody would take,  so as a dog lover too i know how upsetting losing a pet is, best wishes, martintheveg.

  5. Hi all, i am new but have had my zebra finches for around three years now, they have quite recently gone from a very large cage

into an indoor aviary that i built from a walk in cupboard originally used for hats coats and shoes etc.

I will put some pics of it up soon. My paired two are black cheek and the newer one i purchased is a white with hint of beige.

she is the one i am looking for company for on the wanted thread. i am retired now and also have a small dog. i shoot 10 metre

target pistol in a club and also fly control line model aeroplanes, i enjoy my early morning walk with my terrier and we often

spot the wild deer around the south Bromley fields which is nice. i really enjoy my birds, i sit and watch them whilst i have my first morning cuppa

and often sit opposite the aviary to watch them, i think they are wonderful pets.my paired two have had three clutches and all found

good loving homes in family houses, but it is getting harder to find homes when i do breed so have not done for a while now.

    all the best, martintheveg.
