  1. I had 18 pair zebras paired up from 1st/2nd week in December and from them had 1 pair hatch 4 and throw out 2 and another pair hatch 2 and throw both out , the other 16 pair had clear eggs has anyone else had results like this so far this year ? Most of the pairs would be either 1st time breeders or one 1st time breeder although a few pair are seasoned breeders who have bred well before .

  2. Ive had a zebra hen lay an extra large egg at least twice the size of a normal egg ive had this a few times over the years without paying to much attention to it but now im on the forum i will just ask the question does the larger egg produce a larger chick that grows into a larger adult ?

  3. Very little rain here in Northern Ireland but very frosty last night and it barely got over freezing all day and the frost is back already for tonight but hopefully my birds will be ok as all inside . Hope none of you get your own house or bird rooms flooded as that would be a disaster .

  4. Hi all just looking to know what strengh of ivermectin is safe to be used on zebras and other small finches ? Anytime ive got it before it came from the birdcare company and was 0.1% but today i bought it at the local vets and its made up in shop but is 0.8% i questioned this asking was it not to strong for small finches and she said no its ok . My problem is im worried as for pigeons and parrot like birds its 1% would 0.8% be to strong ? I have not used it yet and will not until im certain its safe .

  5. Im having a guess at these some are 100% correct and some a bit iffy , 1st pic b/f phaeo cock , 2nd phaeo hen , 3rd b/b/b/f cock , 4th b/f fawn cock , 5th fawn b/c hen , 6th b/f/b/c cock ,7th lightback b/c , 8th o/b/b/b/b/f fawn hen with bit of pied in her , 9th fawn pied hen ,10th fawn pied cock , 11th phaeo hen and normal b/b cock , 12th b/f cock and 13th b/f cock and hen hope that helps a bit

  6. Hi Merv , looks like ce-de canary is the winner but i see no one uses what i use that being versele-laga colombine optimal start 25 its a 5kg of pigeon egg food and costs £13 its high in vit E and is 25% protein , because its for pigeons it sounds like it is going to be big crumbs but that is not the case you could not tell the difference between it and canary egg food only difference is the price plus it comes in a big plastic bin which is good for storage when empty . Everyone has their own ideas about whats best but its up to the birds and if they like it they wil eat it .

  7. GARY I HAVE NOT SEEN THEM BRING DROPPINGS INTO THE NEST BUT HAVE FOUND COMPLETE HARDEND DROPPINGS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CLUTCH OF EGGS . I HAVE CLEANED THE EGGS AND JUST HOPE ITS A BIT OF INEXPERENCE ON THEIR BEHALF AND THE WILL BE MORE " HOUSE PROUD " NEXT TIME THANKS , LAURENCE

  8. THE BIRDS ARE IN WOODEN NEST BOXES WITH HAY AN SOME SOFTER NESTING MATERIALS THEY ARE VERY CLEAN AROUND THE VENTS AND I DONT KNOW IF ITS BOTH POOING IN THE NEST AND THEY ALSO SEEM TO BE BRING DROPPINGS FROM THE CAGE INTO THE NEST .

  9. Hi Lawrence, Welcome to the forum. I wouldn’t clean the eggs under any circumstances, egg shells are very porous and anything that your cleaning them with will just soak through the shell and possibly render all your eggs infertile. Is it both birds in each pair that are messy or is it just one of them, take a look at the backend of your birds (the vent) to see if their feathers are clean or wet? Are you using wooden, plastic or the basket type nests? I line my nest boxes with hay right up to the sides and then cover this with jute, I then give the birds extra material so they can finish the job off themselves. Birds can also be like humans in a way, some of them are exceptionally messy others are really tidy.Gary.
