  1. Hi guys

Im looking to pair a hen with a new mate, she has reared two clutches with her previous mate and has been split from him for a few weeks ,  but am aware that she may still have the first cock birds  sperm in her which may result in the new eggs being his. so how long does it take to clear so to speak??

  2. Hi all

I have two nests with chicks of about the same age at present, however only one chick in one and 4 in the other, should i transfer the lone chick?? I attempted this a few weeks ago with a chick from a nest of six to a nest of 2, unfortunately the parents rejected it and I found it dead on the cage floor the following day. Im  a bit unsure of the best approach ??

    Thanks Paul

  3. just wondering what you tend to do when transfering chicks , ive a nest of pied chicks with just two hatched I dont think they are being fed properly ? I only have another pair of pieds with chicks of the same age who are feeding well, a well known java breeder told me that he will just put a tip of nail varnish on the chicks toes when fostering to the same mutations?? any views on this or other tips?

  4. Hi guys , just wondering what you tend to do at this time , would you remove the nest box for a few days prior to removing chicks from the parents or leave it up and just clean it ? I know some who remove it so the chicks get used to not having a nest box before weaning.I have done this over the past few yrs but just wondering about your views??

  5. Hi Faract,

Im fairly new to zebs myself and had this happen last year with two different pairs ?? and also a pair that stopped feeding after 4/5 days on three different clutches !! its gutting when these things happen . But have had good results this year with my Pieds and whites so far, although I have discovered I ve got an egg eating cock bird. I think its the ups and downs every one has when keeping any type of stock. Good luck any way

  6. Hi guys

A hen of mine developed a condition where her eye shut due to her feathers covering it. she responded well to optrex eye drops and was fine, she wasn't bothered by it and remained in good health. However it has happened again and this time she has not responded to the optrex. Any ideas ??

  7. Hi guys ,

The situation continues with the birds beak , however I have noticed a type of clearless fluid coming out of the beak when I am cleaning it, I have put vaseline on her beak as it was recommended in case of mite , Speaking to another Zeb keeper she suggested a possible crop infection ? any ideas or treatments ??

  8. Hi guys'

Thanks for your replies, I have caged her on her own and will apply the vaseline if it is mite? How long would it take the other birds to show signs of infection if this is the case, Any other symptoms I should be aware of?

  9. Hi all,

I have a hen that has  what can only be described as a messy looking beak ?I have cleaned it up and there apears to be like dried food or debris over it. She has been like it for a couple of weeks, she is active , feathers look a bit out of condition ,her vent is clean. but i notice that she tends to open her beak in a yawning fashion? No other birds are presenting with the same symptoms ?? Any ideas or suggestions.

  10. Hi dave , what has happened is that i paired a white hen with a Fawn cheek cock bird who raised a clutch of six chicks with 2 having blindness?? I did not want to repeat this so I paired her with a black breasted cock about a week after splitting her up from the first cock , I waited a week before putting the nest box back, they have reared two chicks which have just feathered up and guess what they are fawn cheeks!

  11. Hi Guys,

following my switch from bengies I have several nests of zebs on the go at the moment, what Im finding is that the parents dont seem as keen on the egg food as the bengies were, some ignoring it completly?? I am using cede at present after speaking to one breeder, I have started soaking seed with it also,  any tips would be great.

    Thanks Paul

  12. Hi All,

I have noticed a lump develop on the neck of one of my hens, Its started to be visible through the feathers, on examining ,its flesh colour, and soft to touch , its not solid at all.The bird is in otherwise good health.Any ideas???

  13. Hi Trevor,

Why do you feel its best to keep them seperate? Ive spoke to a few people who feel the same , is that because of matching pairs for shows?? I am not to bothered about showing knowing how random the pied gene is and do not have the time to put to many pairs down.Although I intend to breed exhibition type birds , maybee in the future I will have more time spare?? Do you know what the outcomes of the first question I asked above??
