Emmy 528 Report post Posted January 25, 2016 Another new variety to my bird shed. (Agapornis Canus) ie the Madagastar lovebird parrot. I was told they are the smallest parrots. They are about the same size as the zebra finch but have a much wider wing span therefore can fly very quickly (guess that will make it more difficult to catch them (lol) ) They seem to be very nervous little birds so I'll try to keep them in a quiet area for a while. I can pair them together April/May so fingers crossed I'll get some chicks. The cock birds have the silver head and hens are shades of green. ( Photo doesn't do them justice) Emmy
SarahR 70 Report post Posted January 25, 2016 ..................thought they were parrolettes........then read what you put....... want haha wonder if they come in red.....or blue.....or black
Emmy 528 Report post Posted January 26, 2016 I thought they were parrolettes too when I first saw them but the breeder told me lots of people make that mistake and they are definitely the smallest of the love bird parrots. I have read up about them and it seems they are quite rare birds and could be difficult to breed. I was also told not many people breed that variety here in Scotland. So its going to be a case of 'fingers crossed' Emmy
SarahR 70 Report post Posted January 26, 2016 i haven't heard of any breeders down here in Blackpool either....must be rare but could you let go of any of the chicks? haha
Emmy 528 Report post Posted January 26, 2016 1 hour ago, SarahR said: but could you let go of any of the chicks? haha I will be difficult to sell them if I do get any young from them but I'll have to do that. Don't have any more space (or money!!) left to build yet another bird shed Emmy
Zebraman 267 Report post Posted January 26, 2016 Am I reading this correctly? Another addition to the Zoo.......
SarahR 70 Report post Posted January 26, 2016 haha i always find space to add to my collection..........most of the time im struggling to let go of my budgie chicks at the moment, all are different mutations....so im reluctant to let go
Emmy 528 Report post Posted March 16, 2016 Sorry Gary and Sarah I seem to have missed the last two replies to this post Yes Gary another 4 new additions (5 counting Bobby the Amazon parrot lol) (They are DEFINITLEY the last) Sarah I know I just wont be able to keep any chicks they have. I just wont have the space and I need the extra cages for the canaries I need to pair up. but IF my Barrabands breed I will find it VERY difficult to part with any of their chicks - but the way things are going with them I doubt if I'll ever get any chicks from them. Tika (the hen) seems to prefer Bobby the Amazon parrot rather than Tiko her 'so called' mate- but he's moulting just now so perhaps she'll change her mind when he gets all his beautiful new feathers. Emmy 528 Report post Posted March 16, 2016 Well this morning I'm getting the Madagastar love bird parrots (Agapornis Canus) prepared for breeding. I have separated the hens from the cocks (in the same cage but with a divider in place- just following instructions I was given) so Chico1 & 2 can still see Chica 1& 2. Maybe keep them like that for 2/3 weeks then pair them up. Because I will soon be having work done in the bird shed and the ' M. love birds' are very timid and get distressed very easily I've decided to keep their cage in the house (I'll be in BIG trouble because of this decision if I'm found out ) The two hens - Chica 1 & Chica 2 The two cocks - Chico 1 & Chico 2 (I think? Looks like they are beginning to moult just now ) Emmy
