  2. I have started to carry out some overdue maintenance and upgrades this weekend, which will mean that the forum will be off line from time to time. You may also experience some disruption and errors when accessing some parts of the forum. I’ll try my best to keep the down time to a minimum, but please be patient if you do experience any problems. Regards, Gary. Source: Updates & Maintenance

  8. I’ve been trying to remove the splits from my Normals for years now, although like Paul, I now have at least five generations that I have records for. I do keep one or two visuals for my lightback strain though...Jeff (juggler) used to breed some cracking silvers, but sadly he recently sold all his stock and only keeps a few pairs now. It’s one of the dilutes that I also favour, but not one that I keep at the moment.Gary.
  9. Unfortunately it’s one of the short falls of breeding Zebs these days because many breeders have and still are, mixing all types of mutations and colours together to achieve the right type? People new to the scene have little or no chance when trying to breed from what may be perceived to be a good quality pair. I myself have fallen foul to this very problem on many occasions and that’s one of the main reasons why I keep detailed records of all my pairings, but even this does not allow for a genetic trait from generations back down the line.Take a look at the Normal for instance, there are very few what can be perceived as “true Normals” mainly because of their usage to produce so many other types over the years. There are, on the other hand many visuals about, but not many genetically true Normals.I’ve even bred from small birds over the years and had some really good results, again because breeders will discard these birds as inferior due to their small size, but this doesn’t mean that they won’t produce good off spring.Life is full of little surprises?Gary.

  18. Welcome to the forum Damian. We look forward to hearing how things progress with your new project. Personally I would line your shed walls with polystyrene sheets available for good builder’s merchants or B&Q. I would then ply line over the top with ¼ or 6mm ply, you can then paint as required. If you’re going to install electrics I would do this before you line the walls.Another option would be to purchase a purpose built setup. Here’s a link to a supplier: Birds & Things

    Hi all

Welcome to the forum Mark. What type do you keep? Gary.
  21. Welcome to the forum Sam. It’s a bad time to be looking for good quality birds as most breeders have only just started to pair their birds for the coming breeding season, although some do breed birds all year round. Jeff on here lives in your neck of the woods and he’s just started with Zebs again, not sure if he will have any yet though? There’s also a sale at billsburrow village hall on Sundays which you may be interested in.Good luck,Gary.

    Penguin Zebs

Clive Cotton (ex Chairman of the Zebra Finch Society) started breeding Penguins and he also developed a website called Simply Penguins, but I’m not sure how far he got with them and if he still keeps them. Have a look at his site and see if you can get in contact with him: Simply PenguinsHope this helps,Gary ;)
  23. Welcome to the forum,Christmas was very good in the Zebraman house hold, I’m afraid a little too much turkey and wine though. It’s good to hear that you’re getting back into keeping Zebs again, please feel free to ask as many questions as you like.Gary.
  24. Hi Tyrone, I now have two flights in my setup with four breeding cages at one end, just in case I need them for unforeseen problems. The first flight is 8ft x 2ft and the second is 6ft x 2ft, this flight also has access to an additional outside flight which is 6ft x 3ft. There is also a walkway between both internal flights. Best regards, Gary.
  25. Well the new winter flight is complete and the birds are in, this should give the birds some well-deserved rest and exercise. Over the coming months I’ll complete some maintenance on the breeding cages and put some thought into what types I’m going to concentrate on for next year. I’m also thinking of entering a few shows next year, time permitting. Gary. Source: Winter Flights
