I'm new to the forum and new to finches - I "found" them by accident after I bought a second hand cage on a whim and chose a pair of finches over a single budgie, mainly because I just like their "noise" and cuteness, it wasn't a hugely technical decision I'm afraid!
Anyway I've had my pair a few months and I've just found a pair of Bicheno's that I'm picking up next week, I just love their colouration and the fact they look like little owls.
My original pair have laid eggs but aren't doing much of sitting on them so we'll see what happens.
Anyway apart from the new finches I've kept almost every animal you could name but this is my first venture into the world of birds, and I'm loving it.
hi and welcome to the forum what type of finches do you have there are so different types ?
-
you get a spare cage frame with them
-
I agree with mark its red mite they are murder to get rid of
-
remove the cock bird he may go on to kill the chick
-
perch in photo is too big for zebra finch bird cant rap foot around perch not saying cause problem but wont help most perches should be between 6/9 mm wide in my opinion or use different diameter perches so it exercises the birds foot

Andy I know you said they quicko cages slot together but does each cage come already assembled or is it in a flat pack? I had thought about them before I got the inside aviary. What I have found with the aviary- there is always lots of seed/husks etc on the floor outside the aviary and it has to be swept up 3/4 times every day guess that's because the back and sides are not solid like the cages in the photo . What I'm really trying to ask is with the quicko cages does most of the 'seed/husks etc stay in the cages and are they easy to clean out?
Emmy
I use orniex cages and most of the husks stay in the cage but Markie came up with a good idea of putting a piece of plastic over the bottom slid and that keeps 99% of the husks in the cage and are very easy to clean just wipe with a cloth if you keep on top of them

cock bird to my eye the beak also is bright red

Visited a few shows before buying my birds and the exhibition zebras excited me more than any other bird at the shows.(also have javas and bengalese)
got to totally agree with you there!!!!!!!!
-
you should read the book breeding zebra finches by mervin f roberts they don't clean their aviary out they have about 2inches of seed on the floor and even leave the dead birds in the aviarysteve
they may well do it but does not mean its right would you leave dead birds on the floor?????????????? because I for one would not

this is just me having a rant I was on another site someone had put on a couple of pictures of there new bird the bird looked ok but the cage was disgusting the walls, back and perches where covered in sh** just totally disgusting then you go and show the world that you are happy to put your new birds in such conditions WHY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RANT OVER
The bird was not a zebra finch
-
tried them on them but they never bothered them
-
I would give them some extra light at least 18 hours a day, the chicks need fed regular and often 6pm to 7 am is to long without food for a newly hatched chick in but this is only my opinion
