  1. Well my lovely new grey penguin hen has decided that my young, pied CFW male is the one for her and they are busily building a nest. The joys of keeping all your birds in an aviary....

Anyway I'm not going to split them up, so if they do manage to have chicks what colours might they be?

  2. Sorry, no photos yet, but I'm really thrilled with them.

Two CFW hens with really well marked tears, a grey penguin hen and a grey penguin male who maybe pied too (but minimally marked). I nearly didn't buy him as I'm low on hens, so don't really need males, but he was singing his little heart out and I caved in. ;):D

  3. For the first time I have fledglings who have beaks that don't quite match up. Their parents don't have misaligned beaks, but one is overshot and the other is undershot. They are starting to eat for themselves and don't seem to have any trouble. I was so pleased as it looks like they are hens (I've had so many male chicks this year) and then I noticed this issue tonight. Boo. :(

Is there anything that I can do, or should I just keep an eye on them?

I assume that breeding from them would be unwise, incase they pass the problem on?

  4. One of my young grey normal males has paired up with a young CFW hen. The male is a son of my grey normal who's fathered both pied and black cheek chicks in the past. So I was thrilled when the young pair hatched three grey chicks. As their quills started to come through, it was apparent that one had white wings and white under it's chin. The feathers started to come out of the quills and I could see that the white wings were perfect - I couldn't have painted them better myself and I was really looking forward to this bird fledging. Sadly he/she was dead on on the floor this morning and was beyond revival. I am gutted. :(

I've lost a few chicks recently, having had a near 100% record of chicks hatched making it to adulthood before. I know another poster on here said that you get used to it. I think that I accept that not all will make it, but I still hope that they will.

  5. The hen sadly died. She was white with small 'tears' more grey than black in colour. I still have the male, he's a bog standard grey normal to look at - I really like him though. :) I can take a photo of him tomorrow if you like. The third chick in that brood was a BC hen and I can also try to photograph her. I have some other grown up chicks from that pairing and they are all male grey normals.

  6. I must apologise that the photos are not the best, he doesn't believe in sitting still for his photo and my photography skills seem to be lacking! ;)

What do you think of this chap? His dad was a grey normal and mum was a CFW.

As with his brother (shown in the last photo) I'm thinking of buying a hen in for him, as I don't have any spares at the moment. I guess he might carry the BC gene? I was thinking of pairing him with a pied hen, unless you have any better suggestions?
