I really enjoyed looking at those. Great photos and lovely birds.

Their chick was on the floor just now with a bloody wing nub. I've popped this one in with the experienced parents too. They seem quite happy with their adopted chicks.
-
Thanks everyone. They had a new chick in the nest this morning and I saw it being fed by the male. I just hope that this one is OK.
-
The hen definitely hasn't had chicks before.
-
Sadly I found a third newly hatched chick on the floor and this one was dead. That's three chicks now, they can't all be mistakes or accidents surely?
-
No, I just found them on the floor. Both had fluffy down and were cold but soon perked up with the heat from my hand.
Maybe I jumped to conclusions too soon? I think I'll leave them where they are though as they are being fed.

I have a pair of Zebs in my aviary that have hatched their first chicks. They have hatched two and both times the newly hatched chick was pushed out of the nest. Luckily I found both chicks (alive) and have popped them in a nest with similar aged chicks and experienced parents. Hopefully they will be OK.
Will the young pair get the idea about looking after their chicks in the future, or will they (or at least one of them - sadly I don't know which) always chuck their chicks out of the nest?
-
Thanks for the answers. I'm not aiming to show. I didn't want to put different sizes in the same aviary if the bigger ones would bully the smaller ones.

Can you mix pet size zebras with the larger exhibition size zebras, or is it best to keep them separate?

It will be going on a slabbed area so hopefully rats wont get in by digging under. Now I'm aware of rats as a potential problem, I'll do my best to make it rat proof.
I'll make sure the flight is fully roofed, plus a safety porch so that no birds can escape when someone enters the aviary.
Thanks for the suggestions so far.

My next project is to build/buy an outdoor aviary for my Zebra finches. At the moment they are in an indoor aviary in the non heated conservatory. I was planning on getting something with a shed/indoor section and a large flight. It would be placed by the house so it will be sheltered from the wind and the worst of the weather.
* Would the shed part need to be heated for the winter?
* Would it be worth roofing part of the flight?
* The mesh on their current aviary is 10mm, is it best to stick to this, or would slightly larger mesh be OK?
* Could I put a pair of canaries in with the Zebras if the aviary is big enough?
* Any other tips or advice?

A sad update I'm afraid. Both chicks were dead this morning. I don't understand quite what went wrong as he was sitting on them a lot and feeding them regularly. They were growing well and enough feathers had come through on the wings to tell that they were pied greys. It wasn't cold last night, they weren't damaged in any way... I just don't understand it.
On a better note, the other nest has healthy chicks and they are doing well.

The chicks are still fine and he's still feeding them, so I'm just going to keep a close eye on them for now.

I don't have any chicks the same age unfortunately (one lot of fledglings and one lot of eggs, due to hatch in the next couple of days). This morning he was feeding the chicks. The only thing I could do is move the nest and the male to my small emergency cage if others start to try to enter the nest.

Thanks for the reply - you've put my mind at rest. I'll just leave everything be and let him get on with it.

I wonder if anyone has had this situation before - have the chicks survived? The pair were experienced parents. Will the male be able to bring up the chicks on his own? Is there anything I can do to help? The nest is in an aviary with other Zebra finches rather than an individual breeding cage, if that makes a difference.
My Surprise Pied Bc - Is He Any Good?

I only breed for fun, but earlier this year my favourite grey normal male and a CFW hen hatched this little chap, a BC hen and a pied grey. It was quite a surprise as the earlier chicks from this pair had all been grey normals.
Sorry that the photos aren't the best, he doesn't sit still for long.
Anyway - what do you think? I'm thinking of buying in a BC hen or a pied hen to breed with him.
