  1. i dry hatch mainly but with me living near the sea, the air is quite humid i had a funny feeling it was brinsia octagon but i wasnt 100% on the octagon bit i have some eggsiting news myself just candled one of the eggs the quail in the aviary is sitting on.....FERTILE and looks due to hatch this week!!! shes sat on about 7 eggs fully natural too even some of the eggs under the shelf are showing fertile!! but will be bringing that load in for incubator just incase it's the heat that have caused them to start developing .....next issue is when the eggs hatch under my broody quail....do i move mum and chicks into my indoor aviary where there are no other birds but plenty of space and private for them or do i leave them outside and risk them getting out, lost or killed D: i have attached some pictures of my japanese chicks from last year the pure yellow one turned out fully white with a little brown spot on back of her head......she was called devil
  2. looks like a brinsia or something like that i have a cheap one (cost me about £40 from ebay) but it does the job for the rare amount i hatch i think mines a Janoel12 or something like that and fully automatic
  3. i have been out into the aviary today....found the quail still sitting tight ....looked under a small shelf.....about 7 more eggs! all together in a corner! tomorrow i'll be setting up my incubator
  4. i hatched japanese quail eggs last year i loved them....but awfully messy! had to sell them all at around Christmas though, they kept killing my dads finches and made so much mess!....but were also very tame what kind of incubator are you using for them?
  5. congrats emmy hope they hatch, i finally have a broody CPQ shes on about 7 eggs! refused to move while my dad cleaned the aviary.....best part is.....shes in a zebbie nest box! we had a spare double nest so we put it on the floor.....she claimed it
  6. i wish mine would all lay at once! haha i have a hen starting to sit but not for long enough going to clear eggs out at weekend and then spend a week collecting fresh eggs to put in the incubator wish my california quail would start laying too!
  7. haha yeah, a series of jumps.....and a bit of swimming first class or 2nd....with little stamps on their backs
  8. shame your not closer or i would of had them haha, most of my quail are getting old so not laying daily
  9. awwwww, cant wait until im allowed to hatch my eggs
  10. fingers crossed for you Emmy.
  11. thank you Didn't have a party......too busy with assignments for uni ....better get back to working on it haha
  12. sadly thats always a risk when hatching eggs.....you also dont want to risk helping them in case you help them too early we have lost one of our female CPQ....think i will have to get some more I wonder what colour speedy will be he looks to be doing sooooo well
  13. ...cant wait until mine start laying now then the challenge to hatch them in my cheap incubator haha soooo cute.....try not to lose him....you never know where he will be if he got out haha
  14. awwwwwwwwwww......can i steal one? haha what you going to be doing with them when they are weaned? selling or keeping? my baby budgies are starting to feather up now
  15. ........my niece just says "ewwwww thats disgusting" to my baby budgies then as they get older she says there pretty i think i will have to find a way to come and steal tosh can't wait to see them fully feathered
  16. they are beautiful emmy.....even if a tad ugly at the same time! haha im in love with tosh love his/her markings
  17. ......oh my emmy.....i wish i could do that with my mums 2 lovies.....but being 20.......i'm far off that My mums 2, which are a pair, are laying at the moment......but they never hatch the eggs, they tend to destroy them so i'm thinking to give their eggs to my kakarikis who never lay haha but the hen spends all her time in the nest would be nice to see what happens mine are an lutino and another yellowish one once they start squawking.....they dont stop D:
  18. haha, i swear they are like zombies the only bad thing about keeping them in a brooder is the mess! Who knew a bird could poop so much!!! They are great birds to hatch.....if you have the patience to clean them out about 5 times a day
  19. Bloody birds!!!! My aviary lot are on strike!!! i order them new nest boxes after putting the old ones up.....thinking they wouldn't breed yet...... they fooled me!!! one of my girls (polo) laid an egg in nest box 2.....so i thought, oh okay......looks like ill leave her nest box up and change it once her chicks fledged..... So i go in yesterday....2 days after polo laid and did a nest check, still nothing but polo now had 2 eggs.....fine with me...... heard them squawking like mad at about 5ish......so i thought i had better check on them.......where were all my breeding females?? (i was in shock, couldn't see any of them) so i ran and got my keys and went into the aviary.....next thing i know all the females came out of their nest boxes apart from polo (which i could understand).... so i thought i'd better check the nest boxes just to ensure that none of my hens had been attacked....this is how it went.... Nest box 1: Lou and Pepper (saw them mating a few times and he doesnt leave her side).... ......slide the door open....OHHHH an egg!! (great!) Nest box 2: Polo and a rescue budgie.....still 2 eggs fine by me, shes a good mummy -she now has 3 eggs as i have had to foster an egg. Nest box 3: Olivia and Viking.......Olivia is an older bird but i dont know her exact age........but she had a big egg bump! -checked today, she has laid and egg but sadly prolapsed afterwards, she is ok, i have fostered her egg to polo and removed her from the aviary, she will be noted as a non-breeder Nest box 4: Squeak......i'm not sure who her partner is....keeping an eye on her......but again AN EGG!!! (i'm thinking there fake eggs at this point, but by how shocked my mum was.....i highly doubt there fake) Nest box 5: Georgia and Big Boy (paired up again).......ANOTHER EGG!!!!! Lastly nest box 6 & 7 both dont have eggs in (thank god)........but they are the nest boxes that dont need replacing!!!!!! So.....out of 7 nest boxes.......5 have eggs!!!! and a total of 6 eggs so far!!!!....5 laid on the same day!!!!! i'm going to need more leg rings......although im not expecting many of them to hatch
  20. it's funny watching them in the brooder too! sooooo many times i thought one or about 5 had died.....nope.....they were just sleeping i used to tap the food dish to trick them into eating, also repeated for the water £3.5k for a base?!?! i spent £150 on mine, hard labor on my part but got it done concrete slabs and concrete only problem i have is slugs.......but i dont feed my birds on the floor so not really a problem how big is your aviary going to be clare?
  21. if it's only for a short time and supervised she should be ok but safety first haha try telling her there just miniature quail i think thats the best part of raising quail, they feed themselves
