pet shops are a mine field!!!! this year the zfs club show is in wales...... an if you go on Facebook/ or the wanted page on here there are plenty of breeders from wales on the pages and a welsh zebra finch society page. cocks together are ok but not too many and even two or three may still fight to establish a pecking order.

silly me, forgot to mention Facebook, lots of pages on there, isn't there a Wales Zebra Finch page ;)

  5. I tend to stay away from buying from pet shops as some (not all) just breed them to death and you don't know what your getting nor have they always been correctly breed ie inter-breeding. Put a shout out for some birds on this pages forsale page or if you're a member on the ZFS do the same on there. Also, there is usually a big Zebra Finch show in Wales and they will surely have birds forsale?

As for putting two cocks into a cage together, they'll probably be ok until females are introduced and then, boom! They will probably start fighting over them! Bengs and Zebs usually get along fine together!

I lost a 26 day old chick over night. 2nd one in two days no rime or reason to it.......

how very odd? had the parents stopped feeding it?  when mine make the jump, i sprinkle some egg food on the food of the breeding cage and put a spray millett in. If just incase the parents stop feeding them they can nbible on soft food. I put a bath in so they have access to water, hopefully in doing that i cover all the bases! If they have died and the parents have still been feeding them, then i'm stumped fella.

i have lost my yellow fife hen to going light, it was very upsetting to watch and i never want to go through that again, my green hen has started laying eggs again but i am not getting excited this time, this bird keeping hobby can be very stressful cant it. :cray:

:cray::cray::cray:sorry to hear this, sadly part and parcel of bird keeping but still not nice. Concentrate on your other birds, they'll ease the pain, they need you.

And here is the back of the bedding area with an acrylic window for viewing and letting in some light.

This looks great, can you clearly see inside? Just wondering that if you open it any birds not in out in the flight might escape? I'm sure you have thought of it but some times babies can huddle up in corners on the floor when they first fledge and if you can't see in the corners (bottom left and right, nearest corners to you as you look thru that window).

I'm not having a go, I love constructing and building my own stuff, it's part of the fun but sometimes problems arise during the build or after the build which you think, ******,hadn't thought of that lol

Oh.  I just done mine 3 inches square.  Maybe too small??

    2016-04-13 13.16.37.jpg

That is angood size, mine isn't much bigger and they manage just  fine. Whole construction looks well made and looks brilliant but one question, how have to attached it to the floor?  It looks like you and move it about???

I will take that into consideration, although I have never seen a sparrow hawk in this area.  My garden is swarming with sparrows, **** and lots of other little birds and I have never seen any predators here apart from the pesky squirrel who seems to love chasing the pigeons about :-)

not being rude fella, but don't take it into consideration, do it. I'm glad i did it as I've had a sparrow hawk visit my outside flight on a number of occasions. Good luck with the build, i find it one of the most enjoyable parts, but then again i do like my DIY ;)

If you go into the "introduce yourself" part of the page, click on my post and there are loads of pictures of my build!

I reduced the dosage today, only got a slight smell and not much colour to the water now

I've done the same Zebrahead, i put 5 pumps into a litre, and like you say, very green and stinks! I tried it with a pair i have in the house and all the hen did all day was flick it out :D (i've uploaded a video to my you tube channel of her doing it) I then tried it on my flock outside and they weren't too keen at first. Like Andy has said, I've watered my down to 3 pumps and I give it to them now every other day! I also make sure the water in the water bath is refreshed the same day I put it in for them so that they can drink that if they're being fussy lol

    Hi Lee,

All joking aside, that is a real shame, but give them a second go you never know.

Mine are being very slow this year all round aviary and cages.

But I am very short on hens, so am off on a hen hunt this weekend, to try and improve things for my zebs.

I do hope you have some luck soon:)

    All the best

    Clare

    Thanks Claire

  14. So this great plan of mine, turns out not so great! :(

Brought 2 pairs inside and put into two breeding cages! all birds split for BC.

In the outside aviary, I put some nest boxes in for them with the idea of replacing any eggs they lay with eggs from my split for BC pairs. Hopefully increasing the number of raised split for BC chicks. Great idea i thought, the birds in the aviary all start nesting etc, then the eggs started to appear.

Very annoyingly my two pair of split for BC birds laid how many eggs? wanna guess? NONE! NOWT! ****** all! Not even one! :diablo:

The birds outside in the cold aviary have laid approx 40 plus eggs :vava: 13 have hatched so far, 11 survived, just rung 3 today!!! So got loads of CFW's babies :shok: on the go but not a ruddy one from my two pairs in the nice warm cosy back bedroom! God give me strength! :cray:
