Herb 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2013 Hi. On Wednesday we had a white Zebra finch visiting our garden and picking up seed from the floor below the feeders. It was pretty murky yesterday and we had very few birds. If he (she) has been lucky enough to survive (unlikely?) any tips for catching him. I don't want to risk damage, but I can't see him Lasting long.
norfolk flyer 208 Report post Posted September 7, 2013 Hi, It's a female chestnut flanked white, Unless she's a regular to your garden it will be hard to catch, if she keeps coming just make sure there's food and hopefully you can get a bit closer each time, All the best, Trevor
Emmy 528 Report post Posted September 7, 2013 Hi Herb when any of my finches escape from their inside aviary I use one of those fishing nets that's on a long cane (the kind kids use to 'fish' in ponds) but I guess it would be more difficult outside unless you put down some seed for it. Hope you catch it. just like to say too : Welcome to the forum Emmy
ssteves 51 Report post Posted September 7, 2013 is that your garage or shed roof its sitting on,if so leave the door open with some seed just inside tie a bit of string to the handle sit and wait once it goes inside pull it shut quickly thats what i did when i let one of my zebs out,if you can't do that use a bird cage with out the base on put a bowl of seed in the middle and then prop it up at one end useing a stick with string attached and again sit a little bit away from the cage, when it goes to eat the food give the string a gentle tug, some one in the cage and aviary caught a family of st helena's that way. steve

Herb 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2013 I have been on the look out all day and she has not been back. I will keep looking and have made sure the feeders are full. I know nothing about these birds, so I don't know their range, but I have asked around the village and there do not seem to be any keepers in the village. She has obviously escaped from somewhere. We get a lot of sparrow hawks here and she makes an obvious target. Odds are not in her favour. I have the children's nets at the ready. And will try to bait the back door of the garage per Steve's suggestion if she does come back.
Danh 3 Report post Posted September 7, 2013 I hope she does come back and you manage to trap her as her odds aren't good out there in the wild. As long as there's a food source somewhere along the way and not to many predators she'll go as far as her little wings will take her. Lets hope she comes back
