Female finches usually still lay eggs even if there is no nest basket/box or nesting material in the cage at least mine do. Its really very distressing when two finches don't get along with each other I've had to separate a pair of mine for the same reason but I have room for other cages. If your parents had lived near me I would have gladly have take them but unfortunately I'm in Scotland. I do hope you can find someone to help out.
