Well done Andy, I'd missed the point about beak colour. (and I breed Pied/Whites too. Duhhh!)
Do BBs not have tail markings?
-
Hi Penny,
To get a White in a clutch which is true to the parents (non fostered in) then both parents need to be carrying the Pied/White gene.( gene is recessive)
So if the mum is a visual White then Dad needs to be carrying the gene. BUT there are quite a few mutations out there that could look like white.
Hope that those members will explain if it not a Pied/White

Penny,
Hope the new birds do good.
Regarding One egg from five hatching. I know you probably were away but it might be useful to number your eggs as they are laid. That way you would know if it was #5 that hatched there is a strong possibility that no others will. But give them a day or two more. This might also help if you are candling the eggs and have more than 1 fertile etc.

Penny,
I think the basic concept of the Forum is for experienced owners to be able to help newcomers. I'm only passing on the knowledge gained from 3 years on here with Zebies. So don't apologise for asking questions and as someone on here said ' The only stupid question is the one not asked'
Mine seem to start moulting about 2 months and take about 6 weeks to complete. (others might find their birds differ from that)
CFW do to take longer I find.

Hi Penny
Hope you are having a good holiday.
Those youngsters look good but you won't get to know their gender until they moult out I'm afraid.
Some times young cocks try singing as they start the moult and this gives a good indication before you see any cheek or flank feathers
It's easier with sex linked chicks i.e. Fawn cock to normal hen will give Fawn hen chicks and same goes for CFW to normal. etc.
If you paired an Ino Budgie to a normal you end up with Ino hens. ( same scenario)
But this can also work where the cock is split for a sex linked mutation you get those hen chicks but also other hens could be say Normal.
If that is parents in the shot I notice the hen is Black Cheek so those chicks will be split BC. when you breed with them bear it in mind and pair BC to them if you want BC chicks or use non BC partners.
Hope that doesn't sound too much like a lecture.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Well done Penny,
Unfortunately chicks do get injured or they might even be weak and die even if they are fed. If you have candled the 4th egg and it's clear then you could remove it but by leaving it in the nest it could be protecting the other chicks from getting squashed. Your choice I guess, but don't leave it in there too long as it could start to go off and contaminate.
I know all about Budgies and them being a little awkward at times. I always checked with others and it seemed that they also had the same problems. Zebbies can be like that too.
Keep up the good work and enjoy your birds.

Penny,
The only thing I can say for sure is that it isn't a White. I'm not much into mutations so can't help more than that.

That's good news Penny. Hope other eggs are fertile and hatch too.
If you do get BC chicks from that pair it would mean the cock is carrying BC.
Keep up the good work.

Not nice at any time but even more poignant at this time of year. We were in the same boat this time last year but it was a friend of nearly 50 years.
Penny, do you know about candling eggs? You could buy a candling torch and check with the eggs in the nest or carefully take them out and hold up to a light.
You should see veins after about 5 days of proper incubation.

Penny,
Some fanciers (including me at times) do the canary trick with replacing first 4-5 eggs with dummys and then reset on day/egg 5-6 so that the chicks mostly hatch out on the same day. (not necessarily at same time). This is done to encourage the parents to feed youngsters and not worry about rest of eggs too much and letting singletons die.
Hope things are going well for you.

Penny,
Good to see you are making sound progress and hope you enjoyed the 'Newsletter' Probably best time to pair up for ZFS rings would be about 7th December.
What would you like/wish for with that BChen X Normal cock pairing. Or is the cock carrying the BC gene do you know?

Well done Penny,
Hopefully we will see you around the shows too.

Emmy,
Who's hen house is that? It's nearly as big as my Bungalow. :-)

Well it might be just Human to think. 'Hang on a moment! when I got off the nest there were just eggs, now there are chicks but where's the shell?'
I tend to do that if the chicks are just minutes old but when older I put the fostered with the chicks from the foster nest and gently move them around to get smells on the foster chick. (I did it with the Budgies and still do it)
BUT I have to admit to never having Bengalese as fosters so there is probably no problems.
Hope all works well for you Emmy

Question??? Did you put any of the egg shell in the nest when you transferred the chicks from the incubator.

Yeh! but just think of all those lovely daily fresh eggs when they start to lay. If we lived close I'd put my order in now. :-)
I keep saying that when the Rabbits go I would like a Chicken or two. But NOOO! rats is the answer I get. ( hang on, what's the difference between a Rabbit run and Chicken run or the ones that come to the bird feeders) (Logic?)
You'll have to weed out the cockerels though or you'll be incubating hens eggs I can see.
No doubt you'll enjoy your chicks.

I hate to say this Emmy, but with eggs disappearing and now the D'Dove chick Have you got an unwanted guest in your flight? ( I'm thinking a Roland or even stoat/weasel.
I know birds will eat their eggs at times but do you have carnivorous birds? Chickens might think the little chick is a caterpillar though, if they are in the flight. Very perplexing I must say.
