    a newbies view

Penny that sounds really great what you are planning. Had a wee laugh to myself when you said you bought more and now you will have 26. One thing for sure re the breeding -soon, if you let them breed you will be able to add a '0' onto the 26 . Is that 3 of your birds? If they are they are beautiful just love those colours. Hope all goes well with your aviary. Emmy

    First young

Any more hatched out yet Trevor? Remember that pair of fawn penguins (one crested)I bought at Stafford you wanted to know about them- (the ones that laid the double yolker- Seems their eggs wont be hatching now maybe some not fertile or chick died early in the shell because none have hatched out - but they are raising two chicks from another pair that had abandoned their nest and I put two eggs from that abandoned nest into the incubator and as soon as they hatched out I transferred the chicks into their nest and so far the chicks are being fed. Just not sure whether to remove the other eggs from the nest or just leave them until those chicks are a little bit older? Emmy

    Fawn 2012

Just beautiful Paul. I've got a variety of different colours in the aviary -difficult to catch them though. Some of them are a good size as well. Problem is I don't know the parents of the birds that's why I got a new bird shed and this year I'm cage breeding. I'm hoping that apart from the finches I'll hopefully get some young from my gouldians and owl finches. Emmy

Good to see you back here again Paul You have some beautiful birds there. Have you put any into any shows recently? Emmy
  6. Really nice photo Sarah Thanks for the diagram I thought that's where the choice would be for adding photos but for some reason its not showing up on my post. Need to have a word with Gary to find out what I've done wrong--again!! (lol)

Hope they all hatch out for you. Fingers crossed.
  8. That's some size of beak!! Sarah how did you manage to get that picture downloaded on to a reply post? emmy
  9. That's a great thing you are doing Sarah, what would get me is the parting with them when a new permanent home was found. When I 'rescue' anything guess it would be here to stay forever (lol)

    Young Normals

One for certain Nick that youngster didn't let you down. He's a corker! Will you be showing him? Emmy
  12. Kinda like my home Sarah I've got more than nine different species (lol) I rescue bird too - I was selling some of my finches to a pet section in a shop and noticed they had a zebra finch with a damaged foot they told me it had been to a vet and was ok now but I felt sorry for it so next day I went back with one of my healthy finches and swapped it for the one with the damaged foot. It's now in beside my other two 'disabled' finches (lol) and the three of them get on great. Emmy
  13. Glad to see you back Sarah. The quails do look odd lying like that. (lol) I didn't realise that the Japanese quail would kill zebra finches I have only ever had Chinese Painted quail in the aviary but the 9 of them are in a hutch just now - once I get organised I will be putting them into the inside flight for the winter. I have never tried putting the Texan Whites into the outside flight. I shouldn't really have put those 4 Texan white eggs into the incubator but I was curious to find out if their eggs were fertile. So I will be selling them. At the moment I have 4 separate lots of Texan white quails (that's not counting the young ones.) I just cant put them all together - the cock birds were fighting with each other. One of the 4 groups are my O.A.P's there's 3 of them so they get a hutch to themselves in their old age (lol) Nice to chat to you again. Emmy
  14. Welcome to the forum Penny One thing for sure you wont regret starting with zebra finches. I started off with cage breeding and then I got my aviary (inside & outside flights) then the BIRDS decided they would choose their own partners -the parents stuck together like glue but when the young came along I found it difficult to say which ones belonged to each set of parents and at night after the young had fledged they didn't go back into their own nest - all the young ones chose an empty nest and squashed up together. I have just got another bird shed so this year coming I'm going back to cage breeding. I think you are doing the correct thing by starting off cage breeding and I'm sure any problems you encounter there will always be someone here willing to give you advice. Good luck in finding the CFW you are searching for Emmy.
  15. Best Wishes from me too Danny
  16. Hope you've had a nice time celebrating your very special 50th birthday. Emmy
  17. Probably your first thoughts will be when you look at the photo will be-- 'poor chick it didn't make it' BUT its alive and kicking -- its just enjoying the warmth in the brooder. First time I saw this, 3 chicks were lying like this with their legs stretched out and I thought they had died. (1st photo from 'choose files' 2nd photo used drag)
  18. Sending you some Birthday wishes Gary and when you make them I hope they all come true. Emmy (I know its not quite the 5th yet but close enough )
  19. That was good of you rescuing that cockatiel you wont regret doing that I've found they are very intelligent birds. Just recently I have posted two videos of mine on youtube: https://youtu.be/Ga5tfQFMCkg Dawn Chorus!!! Nah! just four hungry babies waiting to be fed. (lol) https://youtu.be/-kkZvAu6mKo Minutes later after being fed! I have two pairs of cockatiels in my outside aviary along with my zebra finches, canaries, Bengalese and diamond doves. Hope you manage to get some other birds soon Emmy
  20. Trevor please post some more photos of them when they fledge. Emmy
  21. Looking good Trevor bet you cant wait until they fledge. Is it three in the nest or four? Emmy
  22. Welcome to the Forum Richard looking forward to reading your future posts. Hope all goes well with your aviary. Emmy

  24. Welcome to the forum Neil Hope all goes well for you and you manage to get some birds soon. Emmy
  25. Hi Clare that is a beautiful variety of chicks you have there. Re my finches (except the BC ones) they have all been allowed to choose their own mate - but it's always the same they never choose the partner I would like them to have Very poor year with my canaries only 3 young and they had to be hand reared.
