  1. hi and welcome steve
  2. hi and welcome about 40 years ago i used to keep budgies and zebs together with no problems but 3 yrs ago i started keeping zebs again and put them in with my budgies and i found a couple dead in the nestboxes where they tried to nest, they obviously disturbed the budgies that were nesting so i split them up so i would not happen again steve
  3. no i would not put them together for that reason,i forgot i had a pair of st helena's as well i sold them all as i had to many different types of birds plus did not have heat in my aviary and i lost a couple of my birds through that reason i now have lights and heat in my new aviary hence why i have the gouldians plus i have always wanted some,i have only had my pair about a month and she is already nesting so fingers crossed i am no expert on these birds as i have been a budgie man for the last 40yrs which i gave to my dad and had just normal zebra finches so i am learning about these birds,i have a good book on birds which i got free when i subcribed to cage and aviary called the complete encyclopedia of cage and aviary birds steve
  4. hi dan mine is about 9x8 plus the night shelter it is'nt over crowded i have got honey suckle in mine as well i used to have owl finches in with my canaries, silverbills ,parrot finches and bengies which was fine but zebs and owl finches are closely related accourding to one of my books so you could end up with hybids i am in the middle of building another flight which will be filled with dence planting for my gouldians and star finches i think it is nice to get a surprise when a young bird appears from a nest that you did'nt know about steve
  5. hi dan and welcome i have got bamboo, conifers, laurel? and a pyracantha in mine i did have different grasses in mine but when you forget to water them they don't live long steve
  6. hi tracy and welcome not sure where abouts romney march is in kent but i used to live in sidcup many moons ago i love budgies they were the first birds i ever kept over 40yrs ago and then they were joined by zebs and cockatiels i now keep mainly canaries and zebs but i have just brought some gouldians which have gone to nest already and seemed to have got my star finches in the mood they have just started to make a nest steve
  7. emmy tell them you are thinking of getting a african grey parrot and you are leaving it to them in your will  steve
  8. kerry i was going to say what a meanie but he can't be that bad if he's building you a aviary emmy so does my wife so she can't moan at me about what i spend steve
  9. hi kerry and welcome your friends and family don't know what they are missing, they are a loverly bird steve
  10. hi ron my zebs and canaries are out in my aviary all year round though i do have a night shelter with nest boxes in side they prefer to be in the flight which has polythene all around,i have made frames so i can take them down in the morning and put them back at night which i do even in the summer because it helps to keep the cats off,the other night i forgot to put them back on and my outside light came on when i looked out of my bedroom window at 1o'clock in the morning there was a cat hanging on the wire trying to get to my birds, but getting back to the winter thing my birds love their daily bath outside even when i have had to break the ice,in the winter if there is a really bitter wind i leave the panels up and it can get nice and warm in there. steve
  11. hi clare thank you any help is appreciated ,all these different names for the colours does get confusing in the budgie world a white/yellow budgie with a little colour would be called a recessive pied and a canary would be lightly varigated confusing to new comers emmy i know what you mean about selling them to the right person if some one is going to travel a long way for the birds i know they will look after them,i sold some bengalese early on in the year to someone for a lot less than i advertized them for i gave him some nest pans and a cage for next to nothing and i took them to him with a round trip of about 50 miles so i did not make a penny on them but thought i was helping him out as he was not very old,a few month's later i saw he was selling them for more than he paid for them but never mind that's my moan over for today steve
  12. thanks trevor/paul for confirming what it is, emmy i am like you still trying to work out what each mutations are called when i first had zebs about 40yrs ago i only had normals just the same with my budgies when i got back into birds about 3 years ago there are loads of mutations even with my canaries i have four different types, also i have only bred hen cfw's though i have brought a cock bird so hopefully i might get some more cock birds the trouble with breeding all these nice birds is which one's do i sell, plus someone i know is giving me about 20 more and there are some pieds amongst them steve
  13. here are some photo's of the young bird the cock bird above is the father
  14. thank's trevor it's avairy bred but i have seen the cock bird going in and out of the nest and the hen is a cfw the one's with the grey heads when they are young i will try and take a photo tomorrow what other colours can you get in chestnut flanked zebs steve

  21. hi paul i was having a read on acadiana aviaries web site and it said phaeo's are a very important part of the ingredient used in creating a number of other desirable combinations so i was wondering what were the best colours to use with them i have had a quick look on the genetic calculator,i will stick to just pairing phaeo to phaeo for now thanks steve
  22. hi all i had a look in one of the nest's this morning and there looks to be at least 3 chicks at the moment and a couple more egg's in there so hopefully i will have some nice chick's also for future reference what other colour when pair with a phaeo would give me some nice chick's steve
